First expensive coin I bought was impulsive and reckless.

2002 or 2003. I was new to collecting and buying $100 or so coins on Ebay. Saw an auction for a 1940 Washington graded PCGS MS67. Really didn't know the value and got caught up in the bidding. Won the coin for $675. Seems it was pop 40 at the time with none higher.

Maybe a year later I listed the coin on Ebay without an image. David Hall RC bought it for $850. Registries were on fire.

Had I held it, it would bring about $175 today.

Sometimes you get lucky.

    Bought an 1877 AUish IHC in the early '80's ay the CSNS for $650 on a whim because I was looking for a good example for years. I had the cash on me but WOW was that a major expense, and now I wish I still had the coin along with the rest of my IHC.

    The same coin might make a plus today (not even top pop) with recent examples selling in the $550-$1500 range.

    I bought a 1889-CC $ PCGS MS62 in the early 90's for $6500. Don't remember the dealers name but he offered to resubmit it for me on him. I'm sure he figured he would make me a deal I couldn't refuse if it upgraded. It didn't. Sold it to Gene Henry for a $300 profit. Wish I still had that one.

    Maybe. I recall a small speck on the cheek. One day I'll check the registries and see if I can find it.

    Could be, but I don't recall any toning on the coin.
