Roll of Bicentenial Halves

Stopped at a bank on the way home from work today to see if they had some rolls of half dollars and they only had one. Got home and opened it and to my surprise it was a whole roll of bicentennials! Most were worn but had three really nice ones and seven really good and ten worn. Nice Surprise!!

Anybody have anything like that before?

Thanks

Thats is a nice circ find. Someone must have dumped an inheritance or gift.

Consider that the roll was bought in either 1975 or 1976 (42 or 43 years ago) in the hope that it would appreciate in value. Its fate was that it was turned into a bank at face value.

    Excellent comment.

I turned my original Bicentennial coins rolls (acquired in 1976) back into the bank after about ten years.

    Agree.

From what I can see in the pic (edges and mm) they look clad. Just checking are any with the S mm?

When I was in the arcade business in the early 90's, I would go to the bank to buy quarters in $500 boxes. Once, I got an entire box of circulated bicentennial quarters. I guess someone had accumulated them and learned they were only worth a quarter, then decided to cash them in. Wish I had known about the Denver DDO at the time...

Now, the pretty tellers at the bank put aside the good ones just for me.
Can you imagine if the bank actually hired a collector? You would have competition there...or better yet, imagine if you were working there! Hmmmm, sounds like a good question for the forum. I wonder how many collectors do work at a bank. My daughter did for a few years and would save any silver that came her way but would put aside star notes for me.

    Doughnut money illustration...

When these Bicentennial halves were new, one would have bought two doughnuts.

Today, three of them would buy two doughnuts.

Thus, somebody who held the coins for forty two years, and then turned them back to the bank for face value, actually lost two-thirds of their purchasing power. No gain, and lost two-thirds of their purchasing power.

Keep them another forty years and compared to new, no doubt they will be worth nothing, zilch, nada, rien, zip.

Maybe in 40 years they'll be worth the donut hole. ;)

It is fun to find A roll of these today so many years after issue, but the reason they were at the bank is that someone finally figured out that they are only worth face value. If they were all blazing BU then maybe that would be considered a very minor "score" but in circulated condition, as fun as it is, they are just pocket change.

Someone saved the coins in hopes they'd be Worth Something "someday".

Well, that person's Someday came, and they aren't.

They were advised to deposit them. "They will make some collector's day!"
    And they did.

No silver Hemispherical, no s mm. These were hand rolled both ends. Just looking to start a set with Kennedy halves. There is the Kennedy Half Dollars Basic Silver Short Set, Circulation Strikes (1964-1970) with only eight coins. I thought this one would be good for me to start with. And then move on to a larger set.

    Thanks

I don't think the halves carry a premium but the quarters definitely do.

Just checking; always like to find circ silver.

Collect what you enjoy is what I do. Makes for less stress. :)

Well maybe I can your guys opinion on a second set for me. I am ready to go and just need little direction would be cool. I already started the basic silver short set but eight coins won't take long. I would like to know if a different coin would be better. I'm open for suggestions

    Thanks
