My "real" collection is US type, presently working on post-1839 gold subtypes. I maintain a "side" set of gem raw Jeffersons, Uncs & proofs, 1938-2007, and a select small group of classic silver commems. I haven't added anything to either of those peripheral projects in several years, though.
I had a really cool idea for a side project in local exchange currency about ten years ago, but my particular mission proved so hard I only managed to buy a single item and basically gave up on acquiring more.
Probably coins (mainly CWT's) struck over other coins - collect the under type by date.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
One of my side collections is encased cents. I have a few themes that I focus on including specific expositions. While I don't normally collect the Lewis and Clark expo (yet), I really liked the "(s)cent" and "in-a-cent" sayings and couldn't resist this one.
I collected everything for a while, but years ago sold off everything but my Morgans and Peace Dollars to pay legal fees in my divorce. The Morgan set was my main collection, with the Peace set just being a date/MM complete set that had been purchased as a set for $299 in the early 1990s. I started buying a couple Peace Dollars here and there to upgrade lower end coins, but it was always my side set. After putting collecting on hold for the last 9 years, I am getting back into it and have turned all attention to my side set, going Darkside exclusively now.
Since my firsts are bust coins by die marriage I figured collecting Spanish Colonial pieces from Mexico City and Potosi would make sense. After all much of these pieces were melted down to make our coins.
Then there is Rookwood pottery, fountain pens and a few firearms to use and enjoy.
Oh, can’t call it secondary but the numismatic library is on the same plane as the coins.
Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
I'm having a hard time right now telling what is my primary collection and what is a side collection. There are two or three broad areas of focus that trade places every so often.
I think my Prime Number Set qualifies as my "side collection." Now that I've filled the 1723 and later slots, it gives me an excuse to dabble in dark side for earlier dates. Of course, my British Trade Dollars might also be a side collection.
My whole collection is just stuff that catches my eye (typically toned and/or US type, but not exclusively). As a result, my whole collection is a side collection... or none of it is.

I'm building registry year sets from the great depression era, love the history around that time frame as well as WWII history.
