Has Anyone Been Watching 1970 Topps BB Cello Prices Lately?
Some big movement in these.
Over $1300 for this series 2 pack on PWCC that just closed tonight:
If the collating sequence holds on it there should have been 3 HOFers and a Munson RC in that one, but given the centering of the bottom card showing the Munson and one of the HOFers were likely to be O/C.
And over on BBCE they a series 3 pack listed at $2500!
Given these examples, the next time Fritsch puts some of their inventory up on eBay the prices are probably going to be ridiculous.

Yep, I noticed. Vintage breaks has been buying a lot of them and ripping them. Mainly 2nd and 6th series. Not sure if Leighton was in on any of these or not. Usually I see where he has picked them up and gets them at a good price. On one hand I hate to see so many getting ripped, but I do like the minty cards inside. Got in on a break of the 6th series a while back and my pull was a Pete Rose. Just very slightly off left to right but still may be good enough for a 9. Will find out in a few weeks.

Dave, I have a PSA 10 cello with Oliver also on back (2nd series). Are you pretty sure this is the Munson run? What other HOF should be in there. Thanks!!
Working from memory right now, but I think it’s Killebrew 8 cards “above” the bottom and Munson 10 cards above the bottom as long as the sequencing is intact. Sometimes, not often in my experience, there are some broken sequences in these cellos. I’d say it’s better than 80% intact cellos from the ones I’ve opened.
I’ll check my notes and confirm with a post later.

I've had this one even longer..3rd series pack from the Larry Solomon collection. I like how GAI would holder these with the original outer cardboard boxes.

Fritsch had a ton of 6th series on ebay for the longest time in the $350 to $1,000 range, depending on who was on front and the grade. As usual, I flirted with buying one, but ended up not.
Tim, you know I still want that pack if you ever decide to part with it.

Based on their pricing I think Fritsch became aware that seeing certain players on the front often meant there were stars underneath.
To know the actual sequencing requires the full uncut sheets and you would then have to open a few packs to figure it out. It’s basically every-other-card, offset by a horizontal row traveling left for one of the half sheets and right for the other half sheet. There are 3 groups of 11 cards in each cello, so the middle 11 are always going to be a mystery. Centering of the top and bottom card also matters, since the cards in an 11-card sequence most often come from the same physical sheet ( so if the visibile card is o/c then the other 10 in that sequence are likely to be o/c too).
Every 1970 cello that I’ve purchased from Fritsch was selected based on what was expected to be in the pack based on the sequencing. Most are still unopened, but I’ve opened a few and been quite pleased to find a Munson RC (series 2) and a Mays (series 6) right where they were supposed to be. Both graded at PSA 8.

Answered my own question with some research, lol...
No, in 1970, the set was issued in series, and a series 2 pack like this one can feature any card from that series on top or bottom. These particular cellos are also all from Fritsch so provenance is iron-clad.
$2,500+ for a PSA 7.

I remember seeing that cello box with the ersatz Seaver card in the local candy store in 1970 and wanting that card. I was surprised to eventually get a Seaver but with a portrait picture.
...Love the Thurm packs. Not sure these count as heavy hits but picked them up recently.

The majority of the 1970 2nd series cellos I’ve seen opened had the first 11 cards flip between the left and right half of the 264 card sheet. The next 11 came from the right half of the sheet (Reggie J side). Bottom 11 came from the left half (Munson, Killebrew, McCovey). Note, I have seen a few opened where the groups of 11 cards shifted, I.e. the bottom 11 cards came from the right half not the left half.

On the 1968, I don’t have a picture of the 1968 series 4 sheets so even if it’s the same pattern I couldn’t predict it.
If anyone has photos of the 132-card uncut sheets from 1968 series 4 please post them and I could try to give you an opinion from that.

Boy they were a losing proposition when I was ripping them at $400 a cello. Now they're really a losing proposition!
If anyone wants to see what an actual 1970 cello rip looks like, I am sure there are some good ones posted by me in the archives.
Alan Rosen had a case (at least) of these back in the early 80s (before he was "Mr. Mint". I bought a box (can't recall the price). Third series packs. Unfortunately over the years, I ripped or sold all but two. Had them graded when GAI was the only company grading packs. They took them out of the outer box and graded them.
