1894 Silver Yen, newp, CRASH COURSE ME

I am very much into Jefferson Nickels but this coin is awesome! Tell me all about it. I feel it is better to hear directly from an enthusiast on a subject than just read articles elsewhere. So please some one give me a crash course on this awesome type of coin please. This is my first details purchase, as colorful graded examples are beyond me at the moment.

I'll let others with specific Japanese numismatic knowledge provide more details but I can say that, unlike your nickels, these were not used in normal circulation, rather coins like these are loosely called trade dollars because they were intended to trade with foreign nations, often China, for their bullion value.
Awesome

So, I think there are a lot of fakes of these type raw trade silver out there. I carry an old hard drive magnet with me when I stroll the flea market vendors offerings. I use a free app on my S8+ called coinoscope to id foreign coins. Without the chrysanthimum flower, I can't tell Asian coins apart. But I'm trying. Gobble gobble. Peace Roy

That’s a weird kind of toning on a yen that I’ve never seen before. Most yens and other Japanese coins are found white and with scratches and luster according to their grade. The no brainer in your question of who’s the most appropriate member to crash course you, it’s stork, although I can think of other enthusiasts of Asian coins, (stork specializes in Japan) so keep it up till she sees it.
There’s a Dansco type set album, 1870-1970 if you’d like the dare, I’m building a BU raw type set in one of these but for the Meiji period, as well as some Taisho and others,I often buy slabbed versions in 62-63 and even 65RB depending on the coin’s value, I crack them open and add them to my album. Lately I’ve been advancing excruciatingly and painfully slow. I’ve also upped the quality to theextentthatI’ll gladly upgrade an old 62-63 with a 65 and it’s fun to crack them open.
