So wicked cool. Please convince me that I don't have to buy this!
The (1907) silver medal by Paul Jouve is in an auction I'm attending. I love it but I don't collect medallic art. Should I start now? I mean, of course I shouldn't, but I should I do it anyway?

Kind of creepy for my taste, but if it is (relatively) inexpensive and you will have fun with it, then go for it!
Buy it if you like it and want it!
And if you want to "start" collecting that area...go for it. If not...you still will have something you like!
Hmmmm "The Thinker" and "speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil and hide from evil" ... I like it!
No, not these examples.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
Could be a great conversation starter!
Sounds like a Zen koan - is it a collection if you only have one piece?
I would buy it, but only bring it out for admiration one day each year.

Almost everything is relatively inexpensive until you start adding them up!

Geez, looks like a dog monkey trippin on a miniature sarcophagus. What? Peace Roy

I was going to ask what the monkey was holding.....Looks like a mini-power tool? A Dremel? Whatever.
But as for "should you buy it"? YES! I love spending someone elses money.
Buy it if not too expensive. It is a great piece.
If it makes you feel any better you can engrave a denomination along the bottom and call it a coin.
Goofy me thought it was a stapler until I looked closer. What's the dimensions on that piece?

On a similar note, on a lark, I participated in a nonprofit auction of a lot of stuff and scored 2 real nice bronze medals, a 1927 Lindbergh flight to Paris and a 1931 French Colonialism of Indochina Paris expo for $30 total. They are aged, clean, have great details obv and rev and pleasing to the eye on display. I think you want to do it. Peace Roy

I like medals, but they (like everything else worth collecting) are addictive. I bought one a couple of years ago because it was relatively inexpensive and beautiful in my eyes. I now own over 100 by the same artist. No such thing as a one-off for true collectors.
Wouldn't you really be better off putting the money into a pattern (if you still collect them)?
I once was an impulse buyer. When I saw something I liked that I could afford, I'd buy it. I was able to concentrate my collecting a little more when I began to tell myself, "I could buy that, I could buy this, etc." Great fun and the money stayed in my pocket for that "special" object.
If this one is your "special" piece...

I'm probably not going to bid. In case anyone else wants it, the minimum bid is 600 euros hammer.

If I was really looking to do what would make me "better off", I wouldn't collect anything at all.
Fortunately, that's not me.

Are you sure you want to monkey around with medallic art?
It sounded great until 600 euro was mentioned. It has eye appeal to me, but not at that price point. Then again I collect nickels.
It looks like an Egyptian style object is being held.
Fashioned in its own likeness.

Okay, so never mind. Save your money, you know there are some gorgeous nickels looking for a good home. The hunt continues. Peace Roy

It's the coolest numismatic-related item I've seen all day.
This is like the medallic version of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Great piece.

Thanks for posting it, Andy. It's Cool with a K.

Ah, but you may not be considering that the health benefits of collecting have made you "better off".
Andy, remember in 2001 when I asked you if I was being sucked back in, and you said if I was asking I already was?

The first impulse is to say "Buy it if you really like it". I think it's cool, too, but probably not 600 Euros cool. You likely think it's cooler than most or all who have read this, so maybe it's worth 600 Euros to you.
Any auction records for these? What do they usually sell for? Maybe this should be a consideration.
How easily could you find another? Do they show up once or twice a year or once or twice a decade?
Kewl but pricey.
Only if you have a sucker .....uhhhh .....customer for it.
You do not have to have it because monkey's poop in their hand and throw it at you.
If it pleases you, then buy it.
That is my mantra.
I DO collect other things besides coins.
Sorry, for not talking you out of it but I hope it helps, anyway.

Not worth 600 Euros to me. There are some lovely art medals for this period but this one isn't speaking to me.
It would have been an easier decision if I didn't also "have to buy" some Puerto Rican paper money last week. Not that I'm not worthy, but you can only buy yourself so many gifts before things get out of hand.
