CAC discussions? ok or not ok.

Sort of a blur as to whether they constitute competition to PCGS or not. I believe that they do but the moderator may want to give them a pass and condone discussion here of the topic.
Clarification would be appreciated.

I'm sure they're fine as long as folks are respectful.

Probably wise to hear it from the top. One long thread could get half the forum banned.
That'll make it less cluttered for the survivors.
Why not either tag our moderator and/or post the question in the Rules forum? She has been very prompt in responding.

I dream of a forum where we just discuss actual coins, as opposed to plastic and stickers. I know that makes me a weirdo.

I think that @HeatherBoyd made everything pretty clear in her stickied post up top. So long as coin related discussions don't devolve into name calling and ad hominem attacks, or denigrate our host, they'll be fine.

I did ask about it in the noted thread. Question was not addressed. Maybe it was missed by Heather or perhaps she wants to run it by Mr. Willis.
Seems to be an important subject in numismatics. Best to get the ok before we talk about it here, particularly recommending the service as folks have done in the past.
Rational dialogue about concepts between reasonable people is probably fine.
Radical, hostile, and ad hominem attacks on entities and broad, hyperbolic (mis) characterizations are probably not.

But what if one member says..."Hey...that should CAC...send it in" is that considered a recommendation to take ones business to a competitor? I don't know the answer to that.
Asking for clarification might not be the best plan.
It’s pretty clear from the last many years here that discussions about CAC have been tolerated.
Valuation and pricing have always been part of the hobby and all forms of grading factor into the discussion.
Being tactful about it and remembering who pays the bill for the forum is probably all that is required.
How about: "That coin looks GREAT for the grade - might be worth a second opinion!"
I like to think that I've got pretty good judgement, and that I can clearly perceive stated objectives. Perhaps @HeatherBoyd or @DonWillis will weigh in on this, perhaps personally to you. Meanwhile, I'm gonna stay a re-born nice guy, and tread lightly.

Being that CAC does not grade or slab, I do not see them as a competitor. By this point the coin has already been entombed.
Now if PCGS came out with a Sticker of Excellence to compete with CAC you would have more of a concern.
Shhhh.... the walls have ears.
It is fine to talk about CAC, so long as it isn’t a blind promotion of their servicem, “that coin looks like it deserves a bean” is different than “send all of your coins to CAC or they are not worth anything.”
As said above, be respectful and there shouldn’t be an issue. If there is ever any doubt, feel free to contact me with your question and I will reply as soon as I am able.

CAC does not sticker raw coins. So in order to give CAC any buisiness it has to go through a service like PCGS first. So can they really be considered competition?
I don't see CAC as a competitor to PCGS or NGC but if your look at prices of coins, clearly the market has placed value on beaned slabs. Just like PCGS slabs "typically" command better money than the same grade in NGC slabs. So, IMO, if you want the "better coins" in a particular grade, and have a choice, then start by looking for beaned coins in PCGS slabs.
I don't want to come across rude, but how can you not know the answer to that? CAC does not offer a slabbing service where PCGS does. The two services are not in competition but rather compliment each other. You cannot send a raw coin to CAC. A coin in a PCGS holder can be sent to CAC for confirmation of a solid coin for the grade.
Recommending someone to send a coin to CAC is not the same as recommending someone to send that coin to NGC, ANACS or ICG, all of which are in direct competition with PCGS.
We don't; but I'd imagine some folks don't know how far to push the outer limits with the new board moderation, which might mean we may read more board moderation question threads as a way to poke, push or establish the line.

So "as an example", let's say you send in a PCGS graded 1886O Morgan Dollar in MS64 to CAC and it comes back with a gold bean. Is CAC telling you it's just strong for the grade or that it might even be a 65? Should you send it back to PCGS for reconsideration in hopes that it gets bumped to a 65? Would a CAC gold bean help PCGS in making that decision?
Hey, the difference is more that $100k in this example. Lots of other coins that take really big jumps for just one grade level. Does a gold bean make it worth trying?
Better than not walking at all!
Heather, thank you for the guidance on the subject.
Not rude at all. I will send you a PM as this was not meant to be a thread of controversy, but one of information.
A gold bean on a 64 means CAC thinks it would easily sticker as a 65. Whether or not PCGS would pay attention to a gold sticker on a resubmission I have no idea.
Show me the coin. I can sniff the glue when it's in hand.

CAC threads have never been a problem. Why would they be a problem now?
I don't think CAC is really a competitor. They don't slab or authenticate.
The bigger problem with CAC threads is people end up attacking CAC.
Forget about CAC, it seems that it's NGC that is the big taboo word. It seems it already has been established
that to SOME degree
you can't say go to NGC.
you can't be critical of NGC.
So go by the rule that the mention of NGC is an offense you will be banned for and you'll be fine.

Not easy for me...but this is a good time to hit the mute.
This is not accurate. Feel free to talk about NGC, share your NGC graded coins. Just don’t say “send your coins to NGC, ANACS etc. instead of PCGS. And don’t go on rants about how NGC is awful, ANACS is awful etc.
Pretty simple really.

Unless the boo birds come in, I am just sitting back and reading...
Of course NGC is taboo. This is the PCGS forums
Easy for me: I like PCGS, NGC and ANACS and I have coins graded by all three and am 100% satisfied. I do not have any coins with CAC stickers and probably won't. Personal preference.
What is a "boo bird?"
cac has become an important part of the coin market just like PCGS is. I cant imagine a forum where cac couldn't be discussed (and from what Heather has stated my opinion is shared).

never understood why one would pay twice to have a coin graded. I figure if you need a 2nd opinion why even bother getting the first. Maybe someday soon you will be able to pay a 3rd time to have someone certify the sticker that certified the slab. lulz
