To open or not to open? That is the question.

I finally got a day off from work (night shift is terrible), and I have been sitting here today looking through some coins I have recently acquired. In one of my boxes, there is a run of 1954-1964 proof sets in the original sealed envelopes(54 is in a box). I have had them for awhile now, along with several sealed mint boxes of different year proof and mint sets. So the question arises, do I give in to the urge to see these proof coins or leave them be??

Ya can't unring a bell, or unscratch a lottery ticket. Leave them be, wondering is a lot more fun than knowing.

My first love is cameras and there are people that collect cameras still in their boxes. I don't understand at all. I don't collect cameras to sit on shelves in a box, I collect them to use! I get it that not everyone wants to actually put film through a collectible camera, but to leave it in a box, what's the point?
I tend to think the same with coins. I can understand graded slabs, but keeping coins in a box? Really you're collecting cardboard at that point, not coins.

Are you sure they are mint sealed? The fake seals are very good now.
I am as sure as I can be, bought from reputable sources.
I for one would have to take a peek.
I admire the guys that can sit on unopened baseball cards for 4 decades. Not me. Everything gets opened.
I have been opening 1956-1964 sets and using the best examples to make a capitol plastic holdered set
Imagine the look on the unfortunate souls who opened their sets only to find washers.

Yes indeed! Still haven't decided whether to open them or not...
Anything after 1955 wouldn't carry a big enough premium (10-20% or less) sealed for me to leave them closed. I want to see my coins...of course, I've also never bought a sealed set. Your chances of finding any great CAM or DCAM coins isn't great, but that's where the real value is, so no harm in looking IMHO.
If you can take good pictures, we all love to live vicariously through a good "opening" thread, so opening one set at a time and posting the pictures could be fun. Of course in saying so, I'm primarily referencing the 1950-70 sets, after that are all pretty consistent in quality and would be somewhat less interesting.
Do you collect envelopes or coins? If you are keeping them sealed you are really just saving them for someone else to enjoy opening later. If you have had them awhile and feel the value is in the sealed envelope then sell them and use the money to buy a coin you enjoy.
P.S. I would also enjoy a good opening thread!!
The boxed one could be a real stunner. That tissue paper did great things to some.

It's like a Schrödinger's cat thing. While the boxes/envelopes are sealed, the coins are both toned, and not!

I think an unboxing thread is a great idea! I will have to do that. I believe I will start tomorrow
It reminded me to my girlfriend who keeps buying expensive jewelry and have them locked in SDB

I couldn't wait to see the reveal ...... they may be all toned beautifully while you were sleeping
Open them up, coins are meant to be looked at, or spent in my case😁
I'm not a buyer of coins I can't look at, so I'm opening them. If you're hesitant to open the 54 box, sell it to someone who collects boxes for Obscene Profit(TM) and buy a really nice 54 set slabbed.
The envelopes can probably be steamed or frozen open safely, and may already have been. I'm sure someone here has done or tried that who can comment.

Open them on video; you can experience it again and again.

Sorry Modcrewman but I have to disagree. There are 1955 and 1956 DDO and DDR that can be worth a lot so my vote is open them suckers up!!

Yeah! Maybe make it an unboxing adventure on YouTube. Peace Roy

Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]
I have opened them in the past. You never know what you might find in there. I found 3 of these out of 5 sealed envelopes.
.

You do realize, my vote was to open them up too right? Lots of reasons to open, very few to leave them sealed.
Open, Open, Open......... Says Me.
Right Now!!!!!!!!
Then post pics.
Don't open it !!!
But why!?

Hope for the best; yet, prepare for the worse. I never had such luck in these adventures. You may have something original but odds are against you. JMHO.
