1963 D ms66FS Jefferson nickel

I just noticed that this coin just showed up in the pop report. Up until now there we’re 3 in 65FS with none finer, which hasn’t changed so this new coin can’t be an upgrade. The last sale at Heritage was for $5600 which I won. Does anyone know anything about it? Is it for sale?

    The coin is in the Hansen collection. Cert number is 35921764. It was graded in late July or early August

    OK, I just looked and IMHO is not a 66 (too much die erosion for me) and is also a few horses hairs from FS IMO

    Hmmm... the steps look like they’ve got a few hits.

    Where did it come from? An NGC holder perhaps?

    No reason it couldn't be one of the 65fs if they cracked it out before sending it in. Wouldn't show in the pop report. Looks like they were liberal on the grade and the steps.

    For contrast, this is a 42D/D I cherrypicked back in 2006 time frame that was graded 64 no full step.

    Back to the 1963-D. I agree questionable grade and FS at the risk of sounding like a whiner because I did not take it! As far as a break-out, can't be sure. However the coin does not match the 2 MS65FS examples presented in TV. The beauty of the coin is n the eye of the owner!

    A few million of these have not yet been submitted for authentication....or a "Special Price" on some crooked TV-sales show. :)

    I agree, there are way too many marks on the steps for me to consider that FS! It should be clean as a whistle on the steps for FS designation(at least for my liking). Same with FBL Franklin’s as well as FB Mercury dimes.

    The Jefferson "Steps" designation has always been a crap shoot! I've seen worse, but agree it doesn't meet the book definition.

    A 66 with the big gouges on the top of the reverse? I dont see a 66 there

    I do not see a 66 or FS. Edit to say condition rarity strikes again, ouch.

    There may be a few to many marks/gouges for the
    grade. Overall the coin is still pleasing . The steps are
    very well struck with a few hits. Most 1963-D nickels
    don't have well defined steps, more like what looks to
    be a mound of dirt.

    Your coin is a no questions FS by prevailing standards. I'm not sure why that would even be controversial.

    I personally wont bid or buy a Jeffersons with excessive die erosion. I have seen some erodded ones graded that are just horrible looking.

    Hello Jefferson people!
    I want this full step grader for all my Pcgs submissions. Seriously.

    Full step rant
    This coin has rough die erosion, like struck through sand, with great looking partial steps for the year. It’s like they cleaned up the corners on a 1938 reverse. Nice at a glance though. I would hesitate to spend $100 for this and then only that much for the registry points.

    To me having this coin would feel like having a fake certification number in my set. I don’t want to sound like I’m strait up trash talking, but I have submitted many coins of superior quality and steps only receive ms64 or 65 and no suffix grades.
