“Littleton Coin, coins are overprice” sorry for bad talk about Littleton🙁 good for non collectors

Littleton is selling raw Au 55 half eagles for $625, that’s overpriced, I bought a Ms 62 PCGS half eagle for $283 less than what they are selling.

I usto buy many coins form Littleton when beginning the hobby, when I learned I payed way over retail I felt ripped off, I expressing my feelings about Littleton and hoping others new collectors won’t over pay on coins from Littleton. Sorry if my comments about Littleton is upsetting. I guess Littleton is good for non collectors and coin like gifts

I think people again confuse Gross with Net. I'd imagine that Littleton actually makes less on gold eagles than the U.S. Mint.

Just my humble opinion............they can not be 'over-priced' if people are buying from them, and they are still in business.

I could say that my local hardware store is 'over-priced' because I can buy it cheaper at the Big Box store, but then I can say the Big Box store is 'over-priced' because I can buy it cheaper on-line.

Yes they can be overpriced but when they claim its uncirculated, they mean it. They only buy the best most times. They have been and probably still are the place for new collectors to go to with their subscription programs. High priced? Yep, but they must be doing something right. They've been around for a long time.

I'm never going to bad mouth Littleton. They bring a LOT of new collectors into the market. Better yet, if you purchase an AU 1872 two cent piece from them, that's exactly what you will get. If you worked at it, you may have been able to find it for less money, but they gave you exactly what you bought.

Yes but there are sources that can be also well trusted for a lot less mony such as, Liberty coin, Apmax, Falmouth Stamp and coin (online sight also) and many 100% satisfaction people on eBay. I will say Littleton has good supplies but overpriced coins.

They are trust worthy don’t get me wrong, I never said there stuff is fake and untrustworthy, I said it’s overpriced and sum is not numismatic like the colored half dollars.

As many have mentioned , you will get what they say it is and if your in it for the long run , it may actually suit you better to buy from them than say a local shop/show as you may end up with a great deal om n a problem coin that value wise is going nowhere. And anyone or anything that can bring in newbies to the hobby is most likely a good thing. It is then up to them to advance their eye and knowledge. Again, everything has a purpose,

Ps. Their buy prices are very strong and their demands in terms of original and solid for the grade are even stronger which again will benefit the buyer in long long long run

I guess that makes sense, but newbies don’t buy mutch gold or others vary expensive coin, especially if they are a quarter if not more over retail, I am not talking about auction value.

High prices, too quality, great advertised specials (partial sets of golden dollars at face, etc.).

I got lots of silver eagles at very good prices some years ago when they were running specials for new customers.

Sorry if people are upset about my Littleton coin post I just wanted to share my opinion about Littleton, I usto buy many coins from them when starting out with the hobby and later learned I was paying to mutch. I was felt ripped off, I was hoping people would be careful about buying coins from Littleton. Again if anyone is upset no hard feelings.

25 years ago as a kid I loved looking through Littleton catalogs. I didn't have a budget to do much more than collecting from circulation but Littleton certainly helped get me excited about coins.

How did Littleton 'rip you off?'

Did you get a coin that was properly graded? [Littleton is known for properly graded coins.]
Did you get a coin that was cleaned, whizzed, tooled, etc? [Littleton is not known for selling problem coins as original coins.]
Did you get an altered or counterfeit coin? [Littleton does not have the reputation for selling counterfeit or altered coins.]
Was there a 'bait and switch' with your order? [Littleton is known for being honest.]

Or ... do you just feel that you paid too much? If so, then you paid a premium for a nice, original coin from a retail company.

Seasoned collectors are not Littleton's place in the market. Littleton tends to reach non-collectors (e.g., those looking for coin-type gifts) or newly interested collectors (e.g., those who respond to mailings, magazine ads, etc). You can certainly find better prices on coins, but you will not likely find many national high-volume dealers with Littleton's high level of integrity.

One final thought ... you mentioned that you bought an MS-62 Half Eagle for far less than Littleton's AU-55 example. Considering an MS-62 is usually not an attractive MS coin, perhaps you got a 'good deal' or perhaps you paid exactly what a low-end MS Half Eagle is worth. Sometimes a higher grade coin is not really worth more. [I hope you really did get a nice MS-62, by the way.]

As for Littleton, I don’t buy from them but when my grandma passed, we learned she had purchased a few things. I think it probably made her happy. Undoubtedly she received what was advertised. As for price, caveat emptor.

I'm saddened by many responses in this thread (not really for the outward messaging but HOW it is presented).

If the OP were a more "established", or "popular" poster, I don't think some the responses would have been as biting as they have been.

Yes, Littleton sends what is advertised. Yes, Littleton appears to have high standards (I haven't sold to them, and have only purchased their "intro deals" with SAEs at spot or some SHQs at face.

However, aside from the "loss leader" type of sales they do, how many, ON THIS BOARD, have purchased FROM Littleton AT Littleton advertised prices? Why not? Wouldn't it be a great deal as you know they have high standards and their pricing is "fair" since it covers their higher overhead?

I think the above is more where the OP is coming from, and maybe his wording wasn't the most polite, but PLENTY of folks on here have said pretty much the same about Littleton, on and off, over the years I have been on the forum.

Also, many of the arguments FOR Littleton sure work for ebay sellers and others....that more members have complained about.

Bottom line is: Each person has a right to their own opinion and, if in someone's views another person's opinion/view may be off, then they can either ignore it, be rude about it, or be nice and try to show reasons why.
Very few in this thread have taken the latter approach, imho. A couple have, but most have been like the OP's original title/messaging.....not really wrong, but not that nice about the wording.

The final thing I will say on this matter is this: In numismatics, very few things are honestly rare and unable to be replaced. So, once you have knowledge and experience, there are many sellers who you will recognize price things WAY above what you can find if you look around. Those that are new, don't have that knowledge and experience, or are just unable/too lazy, will be the ones paying the higher prices (I have experience in a few of those areas, over the last 16 years of collecting....purchasing items for way more than I could have).

And for the record, I do not equate a person’s use of English with their intelligence. Some of the most interesting & smart people I know are good ol’ Country-folk who couldn’t spell or write their way out of a paper bag. Likewise, many highly-polished wordsmiths actually say very little.

Still, their/there/they’re is terrifically simple to master. Just a wee bit of effort and you own it for a lifetime.

I like them because ever now and then they will send me a nice new Lincoln cent. Sometimes P mint and sometimes a D mint.
