I think I've Got It

I purchased Mark Goodman's book on Numismatic Photography after reading some blogs about coin photography. I highly recommend it and it is very helpful. I have been using two lamps in my photos, and after experimenting added a mirror at 6 o'clock to lighten up the south end of the coins. Attached are my newest attempts. Obviously I am still an amateur, however, enjoying the journey.

Can I see some of your photos to learn by? I realize I am an amateur and trying to learn.

Okay please tell me how you can show the photo in the text. All I have been able to do is attach jpeg files. I would like to show the photos immediately without having to click on the attached files.

Very very nice!!!! Remember, too much light can blow out details as well. You've got it nailed here just right! Don't worry so much about what time to add a mirror though, you can add one pretty much anytime you want!~ B)

It’s a hobby within a hobby. If you’re not careful the shutterbug will bitecha, HARD :):):)
I think your images are pretty darn good. Way to go.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Copy the picture and paste it in the text box, rather than uploading it.

I have got 2 copies of the Goodman book. Can't ever be without spares, just in case. Those are excellent images. The only way to get better is to do a few thousand (or more) shots of as many coins as you can and see what variables there are in imaging coins and fine tune your technique. I am still learning even after a decade as every coin is different and many are hard to shoot up just right. Now at least I can evaluate my images and when not what I want, have some ideas on how to do them better, but still a long way to go. Enjoy.

Here is the reverse with just a tad bit more exposure - makes the eagle stand out just abit more stronger from the fields. Also some of the coin is a tad bit out of focus. If your camera is mounted to a copy stand, then add a focusing rail so you can fine tune the focus and that will help with that. But still great images and just keep shooting!

So what is a focusing rail? I do not understand that.

Great start. Once you have the fundamentals down, some of it just amounts to style & personal preference. Keep experimenting! You’ll eventually settle into a particular technique and “look” that suits you.

Do a web search on focus rail and read about it in Goodman's book.
