I saw that, and I don't know how I feel about splotchy bold colors on a toned coin. I guess I don't know enough about how it could get that way through normal storage means.
It’s a PCGS 68. It’s been slabbed for a long time. I’ve seen it. It’s pretty spectacular. Roanoke’s do tend tone big time because of their 5 coin cardboard distribution holder

I used to own this coin when it was housed in an old small white ANACS holder. There was an intense debate at that time of whether it was AT or NT. I even had the piece sold, and the new owner requested his money back after showing to a couple of prominent dealers at a show, who advised him to return it. Interesting coin indeed.

Yes, I bought it at a FUN Show around 1998. It was in the case of a jeweler/coin dealer named Johnny. Art Ricci’s wife worked for him. He always had some wildly toned material in his inventory cases. I think he still sets up at FUN. I think he was from Kentucky or TN.

It has AT look. I would not be a buyer at slabbed prices.
And this one would probably go for 5 to 8 times a typical 68.

Yep....it probably would. I'm just stating my own opinion on it. I like some that are toned that others think are AT (and I don't) and I know some I wouldn't touch that others like.
I think the highest auction realized price for a wild toned Roanoke 68 was 46K. It was the Scher coin. Ones in private treaty went for more.

Would love to own a Commemorative set with special coins like this one......... but at multiples of 67+/68 pricing I'm relegated to owning a few blast white ones.
I first saw this in an ANACS holder at a small shop in KY near Ft. Campbell. The dealer also had a stooopid looking TX in a 68 ANACS small holder along with some totally killer toned Mercs. I love the coin. My personal opinion is the coin is NT. Look closely at the small areas especially in the lettering where the color varies greatly and naturally. The color is not on top of the surfaces as AT would be. Monster and wonder coin get over used, but I think both apply here.

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
I'm ok with it as I've seen this kind of max toning on other 67/68 commems. Scroll thru the J&L set.
It just can't decide what color it wants to be. But nice....

Just for interests sake, was it slabbed, and if so, by which TPG?

Spectacular (if NT.)

Mark's word is good enough for me on this one.

It's the unnatural pattern of toning that is bothersome.I'm not saying AT or NT.
Is that the coin that was in a small white ANACS holder in the 1990s? If so, I remember seeing it in-hand and its sister coin, as well.

Just pull up the Roanoke on Coinfacts and scroll though the images.

Good thing I'm not in the commem market, eh?

I remember them passing out coins that looked just like this piece at Woodstock.
But seriously; with luster that warrants a 68 that Roanoke must be one sight to behold.

it is too much for me, kinda doesn't even look like a real coin, imho
Psychedelic!
I do like it but I wouldn't pay the premium associated with a coin such as this one.

Reminds me of that wildy toned Oregon that sold for $67,000 or something like that. Most unusual toning pattern.

It would be cool to see this in hand, wondering how the luster is? If the luster is not dulled or not non-existent then I say wow!

AT vs NT? I dunno. The photo looks a bit juiced to me, even if it is a spectacular toner.
