The assumption being they were lost during the 1898 gold rush. That would likely be wrong. If those are the coins, they don't look like coins lost in the ground for over 120 years. They look like they were in a desk drawer for 75 years and pulled from change around WW2.

Maybe it's like the dealers who get a bunch of stuff and then put a name to the stuff: "Gold Rush Collection."
I don't know if it's still on display, but at one time the museum at Donner Pass had coins that were recovered from the Donner Party campsite.
