Thoughts on this pic of 1964 proof dime. What is the deal?

Have a look at this 1964 proof set dime. I was wondering if anyone might know what the substance is that is on the dime inside the plastic.

Thanks in advance.

  • It looks like olive colored milk spots. I don't know what they are but have seen them before.
  • How did the spots get on the coin? Did they develop over time or were they on there from the get-go?

There's a spot gremlin that goes around ruining these sets, and the little critter seems to have a fixation on me.image Not sure what causes them. Perhaps a bit of moisture sealed inside, a pin pr!ck (I can't believe that word is censored) and some kind of exposure over the years? What I do know, though, is that they ain't coming off without damaging the surface of the coin.

I wonder if the proof set was ever soaked in water?
  • well I bought it as an original 'unopened' mint set from and the envelope didn't look llike it had been soaked. For a package that's almost 40 years old the envelope sure is in good condition. always make ya wonder what you're gettin.

Didn't they use some kind of wash for the planchets?? Coulld that be left over wash residue that has oxidized over the years?

early 50's to middle 60's (stopped when they went clad) they used to wash the planchets with a mild solution of ivory soap n warm water...unfortunately that soap 40 years later is a itch ta get off
