1986 Topps "Super" Jumbo Cellos

I picked up this box a while ago, and until today, I didn't realize it was not the standard cello packs/box. As you can see, it has the same print as the 1986 wax boxes (rather than the generic cello box Topps used throughout the 1980s). And the packs are super thick, containing 50 cards and no gum....rather than the standard cello pack of 28 cards with gum. I couldn't find any of these boxes listed on ebay currently or in the completed listings. Was this perhaps a regional test packagaing issue?

    Good question. I definitely haven't seen them before myself and that's something I scan through frequently. I'd be curious to know

    Those definitely look familiar. I recall at least seeing them in Indiana and probably ripped a few of those back when originally issued. Perhaps another 'Michigan' test packaging?

    Is there a Topps product code on the box bottom?
    Who is the Golf Card Guy?

    I wonder if PSA would grade those, or if
    they're too thick for the holder.

    Geordie, I think the are Super Jumbo PACKS, not the Super Sized CARDS. The Super sized cards came one to a "pack" I believe.

    Cool item! Topps had definitely considered 50-card cello packs as far back as 1972, as I have an outer blue cardboard box from that year with 50c for 50 cards on the box.


    Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

    None of these are cellos in the strictest sense, but Score had 101 card blister packs (early 90s?), 88 Topps had some 90 card packs that were a weird cross between a rack/cello, 89 Topps had the same monstrosities with 100 or 101?, 91 Fleer had some 53 card packs, and I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting.

    I don't know if this is the "product code' you are referring to, but this was the number printed on the bottom of the box: 1-373-37-01-6

    I am still having no luck in finding any info about this box and its distribution. None of the card seller websites have any for sale and Google searches haven't helped either.

    That looks like a Topps product code. Some of the Topps test packaging never got assigned one. You might ping Steve at BBCE to see if he has any info on it.

    Definitely a Topps product code. The last number "6" designates the year of the design, with the preceding 01 meaning it is the original version and has not been revised. All packs and boxes intended for retail sale bear a product code.

    Happy Memorial Day! Trying to do some research on these and stumbled across this thread which preceded my time here. I won a bunch of these on Ebay and it was actually mentioned in the thread. Yet another difficult empty box for me to locate. Anyone else besides the OP have these today?

    Btw, the seller of the auction that I won told me that he got them from a pharmacy as a kid.

    I remember seeing them a couple of times in 86 and 87 at various shows. Cool packs. I'd forgotten about them. Never purchased any.
    Collecting 64, 66, 67, 70 & 71 Baseball. Cubs, wax, cello & rack baseball.

    I'm a new member, but found this thread as I read through the board. I think these cellos are neat. No gum, huge quantity of cards, and a different shaped box. I have a box of them, plus another 15 or 20 loose packs. Has anyone here seen any additional boxes, or even a case of them? I talked to Reed with BBCE and he hadn't even heard of them, much less seen any.

    I guess this would explain the 100 card jumbo racks that would come out the next 3-4 years after...at 100 cards a pack though why not save yourself the trouble and just get a factory set?

    Interesting pack. Wonder how rare these are and how the collation is. I've gotten duplicates in a 15-card pack. If all 50 cards are different, you could build a set really quickly with a few of these.

    As I mentioned earlier in thread I picked up a large loose lot of these back in 2014. But never saw a full or empty box of them. For an 80s unopened collector they are def a cool addition. But really wish I had the box too.

    There are 24 packs to a box. The packs are in stacks of 4, in two rows of three.

    Thanks Kevin, that's a hefty box. 1200 cards, which is about the number of cards from 2 wax boxes.

    This is my box. What do you bet that someone out there really would like that Pete Rose pack? Not for sale, but it was a fun bonus when I realized it was sitting right there on top. I haven't looked at the other packs, so no idea who is on the others.

    I spoke with the guy I bought mine from a while after I started this thread. He lived in Philadelphia and used to do shows in the 1980s. He said Topps sales reps would walk the show floor and offer dealers various products....and said that is likely where he got his boxes from.
