Silver Medals

OnastoneOnastone Posts: 4,162 ✭✭✭✭✭

So I see two SILVER medals coming up in our mint selections for sale August 16'th. Weren't most medals from the mint made of bronze? Yes I know there were some silver tribute Liberty medals for their gold counterparts, but has the government made many silver medals? Or gold medals for that matter? And being president silver 1 oz rounds, is this a plan to do all the presidents again?

I believe you are correct in thinking that most of the medals have been in bronze.

There have been very few silver medals until the recent Liberty and WW1 ones. Even fewer gold ones. Someone with more specific expertise can comment more fully.

I don't think the Mint has revealed whether or not they will repeat the medals that were in the Coin & Chronicles Sets. If they do, they might have a different finish. I seem to remember coming to that conclusion when the announcement was made about the new series of silver presidential medals.

Backroadjunkie will know. He's become my go-to source for Mint updates. :)

The silver presidential medals are probably coming from the popularity of the silver presidential medals included in the Coin and Chronicles sets of a couple of years ago.

Here's the original thread from February...

    Upcoming U.S. Mint medal offerings...

Here is the thread on the current two presidential offerings...

Thanks Backroadjunkie! Thanks for clearing that up and posting links to the original two threads, which I missed, don't know how, there are only at least 10 new threads a day! But that answered all my questions, now to figure out if I want to collect a silver presidential medal set.... maybe, but 10 years out or will that be 11 years out by then? I have a feeling that the prices for silver will change each year too, and by the end of this collection, it will be costing 50 bucks a medal.

The medals in the C&C sets, did they have the Matte finish as well?

Maybe. But the prices were published in the Federal Register:

    DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY
United States Mint Pricing for the Presidential Silver Medals Program
    AGENCY:
United States Mint, Department of the Treasury.
    ACTION: Notice.
    SUMMARY:
The United States Mint is announcing pricing for the Presidential Silver Medals Program as follows:
    Product Retail price
George Washington Presidential Silver Medal ..........$39.95
John Adams Presidential Silver Medal ..........................39.95
    Remaining Presidential Silver Medals ...............................39.95

This is from the PDF the government published:
    Federal Register / Vol. 83, No. 148 / Wednesday, August 1, 2018 / Notices

    This is the problematic part.

When the medals were first announced, they were supposed to be in proof.

The C&C sets were an uncirculated finish, which may or may not be the same as a matte finish.

The Mint may upset many (like me) if they're the same, but then too, it's the government. (Who is here to help you... ;))

Wow, so the government has committed to a set price, interesting!

    Think these will be popular?

I know that there are some presidents that I'd rather not have medals commemorating.

Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]

Well, until they put a notice in the FedReg that they're raising prices...

I should also point out that the first two stand alone silver medals (on ASE blanks, before the Mint started turning them out like guppies) were the 2016 American Liberty, which were priced at $34.95. (And with a mintage of 12.5K/medal, it may have made it the score of the decade if you got yours.) Spot was also $5 higher than the pitiful, mournful and tragic price silver is hovering at now.

So it's not like these are a bargain, but I'm still thinking about putting together a set. I'll get the first two for sure, just to see what they look like in hand...

Hmmm, I did get a couple of those. Those were the first medals I ever got too, as I had never thought about collecting medals...they seem to take a backseat to coins. I guess the appeal is that they are silver!!!
