I'm on a mission to standardize Commemorative half dollars!

Vintage Commemorative half dollars are presented in several ways by the Redbook, TPGS's, and reference books such as Breen/ Swiatek for example. The Battle of Gettysburg is an example of a coin displayed correctly by EVERYONE. IMO, the Oregon Trail is an example of one that is not. IMO, The Redbook is correct. Others are not.
So, the deed is done
As of several weeks ago, one TPGS has been slabbing the DATE and SUBJECT of the coin as the obverse. This goes against decades of usage. I'll be speaking with Jeff Garrett about this in an attempt to switch the Redbook images sooner or later (good luck
).

Slab 'em with the edge up....that'll standardize the little beggars!
I can't imagine how many steps & red tapes you have to endure @Insider2 ....to justify the means
Good luck with the end
Eventually, it may happen. Just like TPGS finally were dragged kicking-and-screaming to grade problem coins.
That was an easy one as the Redbook and US Mint intentions were not involved.
A worthy endeavor. Best of luck. I have always thought Libertads were backwards on obv and rev.
What is needed is a Presidential commission to study the subject and make recommendations from all leading experts.
Not necessary. We just did it. It will make obvious sense to anyone who looks at this series. Sooner or later other TPGS's will follow or they won't. No big deal. It takes longer to turn a loaded barge that has shipped a lot of water than a small canoe.
We did the same thing about coin grading at the first TPGS - INSAB (no longer in existence). While the ANA was having meetings, listening to expert recommendations, preparing a guidebook, etc. We just did it. Finally, the second TPGS (ANACS) came into being.
Ahem.....PCGS is still slabbing "Lincoln Shield" cents with the reverse up....8 years after they started making them.
They'll cater to the buyers....
(Not my coin, and I wish they'd "do it right" too!)
Have fun Mr. Quixote...

It's not the first time I've been called that. Coming from you and the other numismatist is taken as a compliment.
PS Tommy, as you said, all the TPGS's will slab a coin with either side showing at the request of the submitter. What I'm advocating is different.
