Modern US Silver Proof Sets- Why is 2012 so relatively high priced?

bigolebigole Posts: 385 ✭✭✭

Just trying to see what I'm missing. Pretty much all of them can be had for $30 to $60, but the 2012 is $200 or so.

Is there a reason? Aren't the mintages for 2015 lower?

Anyway, I am assuming there's something I just don't know about.

Thanks.

IIRC, the Mint shut down the order period early and unexpectedly. The sets quickly went to a premium in the market.

Mintage isn't always the determining factor. How the sets are distributed (such as the scenario mentioned above) can impact price an availability.

Similar disparities exist in the value of the reverse proof Presidential dollars, for example. The differences were due not to mintage but the way the coins were sold (more coins allowed per HH on one design, so more limited distribution before it sold out).

The 2012s have been coming down from the peak. Give them enough time and they'll be barely above the others.

It's not just the silver sets, even the 2012 Mint sets get a premium.
