The lanky, six-foot-four, long-limbed Abraham Lincoln was a good wrestler in his youth, sparring in some 300 contests --- and only being bested once (fighting a soldier from another unit during the Black Hawk War). According to biographer Carl Sandburg, young Abe once beat an opponent and then challenged the assembled audience: "I'm the big buck of this lick. If any of you want to try it, come on and whet your horns." None obliged.
Lincoln is honored as an "Outstanding American" in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
