I loved Rusty. It's too bad he has no card in several of my favorite sets (1972,1973).
Rusty is also emblematic of the Mets' incompetence over the years.
They waste the #1 pick in the draft on Tim Foli in 1968. They then give him up, along with Ken Singleton and Mike Jorgensen for Rusty. That was a pretty hefty price tag, but at least he was a good player for them. The first guy to rack up 100 RBI in franchise history (in 1975). So what do they do? The pitching rich offensively challenged Mets trade him for a washed up Mickey Lolich. WHY?

I will never forget watching the 1976 All-Star Game. The Tigers were not exactly stellar at the time, yet they placed 3 starters on the AL team. Ron LeFlore was in center, Mark "the Bird" got the starting pitching assignment, and Rusty was in right. I distinctly remember Fidrych needing to borrow a bat and Rusty needing to find a mitt, as he was strictly a DH that year and had not played the field prior to the game. Man, the things you remember as a kid.
RIP to a popular player on both sides of the border.
I remember him with the Montreal Expos. I didn't realize he played major league baseball for 22 years.

One of my favorite Mets. I was a little kid then and didn't understand the trade to get Lolich and still don't now. Definitely will be missed.
He had a great wine collection at Napa Valley Wine Exchange. 25 G just to join. It was an honor to take care of his ROW of pallets of wine. He hit a homer in his teens and homer in his forties. Short list for that. R.I.P Le Grande Orange!

I did not realize he was a rookie in '63. I thought he was younger, but even at age 73 that is too young.

A very solid career
in the world series (1973?) he couldnt throw so when he fielded a ball in the outfield he would toss it underhand to another ourfielder who would then throw it back in!

Ironically Rusty was indeed in the 1973 Topps set as a background player airbrushed in a Houston Astros uniform on Tommie Agee's card (on the right side)

Funny you mention that @Ironmanfan, I just posted about that exact card on my Facebook feed. Rusty as an Astro four years after he left! '73 has some of the most unique landscape cards and action shots, love it!
