How difficult is a Canadian Type set? Can't be nearly as difficult as an American set.

    It isn't as difficult, depending upon the grades you want. In high mint state, it can be very challenging.

    I have a friend who has been working on one in uber grades for over a decade,

    Wasnt thinking anything high grade at all. Mint state maybe, or maybe just nice coins with good meat on them and eye appeal to me. Something to have some fun with.

    It's a great set and can be expanded to include pre-Confederation coinage (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, PEI, New Brunswick, Dominion) issues as well.

    I don't think that there are any real stoppers at all for the set. There are even albums and folders for them, if you want to go that way.

    There is 1 if you consider it part of the set. 1911 Dollar...yes it wasn't issued for circulation but I would love to own one!

    I guess one could say that the Victorian Halves in AU+ would cost more than 1000 CAD, other than that, Everything else should be pretty affordable.

    One other thing I will add that I don't mean as a slam to any group of collectors, but it simply reflects my experience in this field, is that it seems to me that a higher percentage of circulated Canadian and pre-Confederation (as compared to US) coinage has been cleaned rather aggressively in the past. If you are okay with this then that is great, but if you prefer more "original" surfaces then the type set gets that much more difficult.

    I think the last coin to complete my type set was the 20 cents. But that's because I had one years ago and sold it. The next to last was the Victoria 50 cents.

    Interesting observation that a lot of the coins being harshly cleaned.

    Going to have to do some more homework on this possible set. Disappointing that a lot of the type books seem to be discounted by the makers today.

    You still should be able to get an 1870 or 72 half in AU for less than $1000. Even full trends puts one of them just over $1000 US and you should be able to get something for 70-80% of Trends (our Trends is in Cdn $$). The 20 cent shouldn't be a problem ... many available because many were saved (a 1 year coin)

    I put mine in the less expensive Whitman folder. It has fewer spaces (omits the 1911 as a separate type) but fits the Centennial coins nicely and works OK for my mostly circulated set.

    I have an old Whitman bookshelf that is old and rough, but I rarely see any Canadian type whether it be Library of Coins, Whitman or Dansco. This has been one fun undertaking... Worth doing. My set is about finding coins I like and the grade is less important

    I have that same Whitman folder, on top of Whitman folders for most of all the underlying denominations & series. There's still a few holes (all silver) in the Type Coin folder, since any extras from the underlying collections were sold/traded to fill their holes. But someday................

    Should be no problem at all, just look for PQ coins that have not been cleaned, damaged, etc. it's just a matter of how much money you want to put into it...buy the best you can find at your price point.

    Can dip my toes in first on some low cost coins and go from there.

    So many ideas if only had unlimited money.

    Don't know where in US you are, but check out Dale Shafer, in Tulsa of all places. Good, honest dealer and a long time member of Canadian Assc of Numismatic Dealers (CAND).

    You should come to the Toronto coin Expo in May .. the largest T.O. show (3 times/yr) now that the other has lost some of it's sparkle. There is also the annual RCNA convention in Mississauga (this year) in June with a large show & auction, plus seminars, etc. Google any of them. The Expo is held a bit off downtown and right 1 1/2 blocks from a subway stop (from Union Station where the GO transit trains come in). You can park at a Go train lot in Burlington or Oakville and take the train in and not have to fight the traffic/parking
