A guy in coinclub quit doing shows after a really bad one and now just sells online.

I am currently in a state of ennui, and hence have been AWOL for a while. I have always enjoyed the hunt more than taking pride in ownership. I reached a point a few years ago when I realized that I have two heavy safety deposit boxes full of coins and historic medals, yet I hadn't seen many of the items inside in years. Hence, I have put numismatics on hold, and returned to hiking desert southwest canyons as a hobby, and started collecting something else---unusual cacti. In fact, I watched a fight to the death, while planting some new cacti, between a tarantula hawk and a large tarantula in my front yard last year---it went on for half an hour, and seemed more interesting than almost all of my experiences with coins. Like some other Forum members, I have reached a point where experiences seem increasingly important. More important than simply acquiring more possessions.

That sounds great. I used to hike all the time, including southwest canyons like Buckskin Gulch and the Zion Canyon Narrows. It's amazing how long ago that was and I miss it. I have friends that go canyoneering almost every weekend. I've been more into the numismatics lately but want to get back into the outdoors more.

Of course, I still have a lot I want to do with numismatics so I'm not ready to move on myself. The best is yet to come! It's just hard to find time for everything.

I'm curious @tradedollarnut. You certainly have more money than most of us here. What do you find to do with that kind of money? I'm not trying to get into your personal business but am just interested in general terms. Some big new business venture? Philanthropy? Another island? A new house in the Hamptons?

I personally find that my income satisfies all my basic needs, and then some. All the rest is gravy.

I thought I had moved on when I sold my collection of US Coins 25 years ago, but now I'm back at it with a vengeance. So, I've never "moved on". The next time I do move on will be....end game.

My next project is coin photography. Loved photography as a kid, had a dark room and all. Going to put these interests together.

Lots of ways to enjoy numismatics.

Looks like my hobby/game plan.
Whatever hobby I get involved in (imaging happened to be one of them oldabeintx) I always come back to coin collecting, coins must be ingrained in my DNA for some reason.

You sound more like in a funk then really ready to let go fully. Perhaps the time is right when you feel more passion for your new venture.

If you know what you want to do then go for it. If you can’t part with the coins for what others will pay then wait. No regrets.

I find that the Hobby is a good diversion from the hectic pace of modern living, it helps me relax and keep "the big picture" in focus. to that end I think that anything which helps reduce stress and lengthen life is a good thing. maybe you should assess what's going on in your life and decide what the really important things are, much like what Bryce described, and let that lead you. judging only from the Man I have come to know here at the forum you will make a thoughtful decision........................but I doubt you will walk away from the Hobby.
