What does Toning mean in terms of autographs & Memorabilla?

            Hi Guys,
Sorry it's such a basic a quesiton.
My question is what does "Toning" mean in terms of autographs & Memorabilla? Could you please fine it or describe what it means please.

Easiest way to define it would be the fading or discoloration of the signature or item that it's on. You'll see quite a few signed baseball which have yellowed over time...that's toning.
From what I understand, it's the "yellowing" or aging of paper that happens from being exposed to the air and light.
I'm not a coin guy - but I believe they talk about it too - it's the "tarnished" look that coins get.
Just want to add that sometimes they talk about "foxing" which from what I understand is the age "spots" that paper gets from certain elements in paper like iron. Some believe it's also caused by mold/bacteria?
