What does Toning mean in terms of autographs & Memorabilla?

Hi Guys,

Sorry it's such a basic a quesiton.

My question is what does "Toning" mean in terms of autographs & Memorabilla? Could you please fine it or describe what it means please.

  • Easiest way to define it would be the fading or discoloration of the signature or item that it's on. You'll see quite a few signed baseball which have yellowed over time...that's toning.

    From what I understand, it's the "yellowing" or aging of paper that happens from being exposed to the air and light.

    I'm not a coin guy - but I believe they talk about it too - it's the "tarnished" look that coins get.

    Just want to add that sometimes they talk about "foxing" which from what I understand is the age "spots" that paper gets from certain elements in paper like iron. Some believe it's also caused by mold/bacteria?
