What causes those stripes on the coins? I was guessing a rubber band or something? I recently purchased a quantity of morgans and many had these stripes. I dipped them as soon as I got them home and now they are nice and white but just wondering what actually caused the stripe.

There may be other ways, but I think they are from paper tabs that hold them into a "coin saver" type book that banks and S&Ls used to use back in the day. I was given several of these types of books filled with Mercury dimes when I was born in 1954. Dimes were small enough where only "half moon" type slots were used - no paper strips.

Similar to the various tab type toning on early commems.

I like this one because of it's unusualness.

That makes perfect sense. Great and thank you, I learned something new today. I've seen those books, just never put 2 and 2 together.

Nice original bag toning on the left, then added in some NGC fatty toning on the right.

Pull away toning around the date and stars would indicate it's naturally toned. Thanks for posting it Ezmoney!

ezmoney, do you own that coin? ive posted this coin a few time on these forums and I had always hoped to find the owner. this is the picture I saved from an old teletrade auction, I was blown out of the water on bidding, it went for a lot of money, for obvious reasons. it has been on my mind since then. for some reason I remember it as being MS65. not that the grade matters on a piece like this.

@nk1nk ...Yes I am fortunate to be the current caretaker. I call her "Chakra" . I had to have it when I saw it also and it took some prying to get it into my collection.
