    Tougher large cents, yes, a few, but the issues need to be minor, and some might straight grade if re-submitted.

    They are accepted (or at least they were) in PCGS sets but not sure how much weight they have in the total score, they show up with a grade of N1

    In NGC sets they get a value of 50% of the points for the straight grade.

    I started collecting long before third party grading and bought plenty of coins at auction via mail bid with no photos or black and white actual size pictures I have several details coins, mostly cleaned, in my Morgan dollar and Liberty half-eagle registry sets ATS. In the recent past I've purchased two details coins because they filled a hole and the price was right.

    I would buy an R5 or higher bust quarter any day for the right price. When you collect varieties, even the ugly duckling is still cute :p

    It depends on your budget. Someone with limited means may have to purchase details coins in order to pursue his interests.

    The wonderful thing about coin collecting is that there's something for everyone at every level.

    I have purchased a coin or 2 with altered surfaces ( with toning)
    After a quick dip resubmitted and got a straight graded coin
    Must be selective!

    I have made a few "details" coins.

    my best is a holed... 1955 DDO.

    WTB... errors, New Orleans gold, and circulated 20th key date coins!

    Yes. I like them for my 'conversation piece" 7070 set. It's not a set I ever plan on selling and "details" lets me get a coin thats easier to view than I could otherwise afford.

    I just wish there were MORE available.

    One of two known of a popular variety subset with both being in detail holders. Lucky to have it and the grade is just one attribute that makes up the total coin view.

    I only have two "Details" coins. One is an 1909S IHC XF details that I bought at an auction because it was going so cheap and the "cleaning" amounted to a slight rub on the ribbon. I also have a 1815/2 CBH in XF and the "cleaning" amounts to a small bright spot under the eagles wing....saved a couple of grand and completed my CBH year set. Seemed like a win-win to me.

    The only coin I ever bought that was in a details holder ended up with a straight grade after I cracked it out and resubmitted it. I have bought some raw coins that ended up in details holders however.

    18th century maybe, if light environmental damage, especially scarce or rare colonials.

    There are coins that NGC or PCGS will "details" due to their perception of damage vs. acceptable, especially chop market T$1 and the "L" and "E" counterstamp quarters.

    From what I've personally seen, I'll say that virtually anyone who buys "raw" coins has bought coins that would NOT straight grade. Unless you really know what you are doing its best to stick with slabs so you'll now the coin has problems. :wink:
