In person the coin almost look proof. What is it? Date? Any value over face? TIA

    Seems to be Japanese 500 Yen coin from 1982-1989 era. Flower side photo is probably upside down - leaves should fall downwards not up.

    I think the alloy used today is a little different (slightly yellow?) and cannot say whether or not your piece is current (redeemable). The present 500 yen is practically a coin equivalent to four or five dollars U.S.

    500 yen, Heisei 19 aka 2007. Bottom shot is rotated 180 degrees too. This is the current version. You can kind of make out the shadowed figures in the horizontal markings of the big zeros.

    Well, I hesitated because the current version isn't photographed in Krause. Sorry. And yes, I can see shadowy stuff in the big zeros.

    Wikipedia has an excellent article on the Japanese 500 yen coin, and explains why they made various changes to it about 2001.
