Do you die variety folks know what order different ones were struck in?

I can see how a progressive die crack or something that you can trace would tell you sorta what order ...some... were struck in, but what about center dots and stuff like that?

This thread made me curious.

if you can find the book, check out "Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837" by Logan and McCloskey. Authors used degradation of dies and collar identification methods to set up emission order.

A lot of the specialized texts will have this info. For example, Steve Tompkins excellent book on Bust Quarters has 'Die Linkage Flow Charts' and even 'Die Re-Marriage Charts' that put together a probable sequence. The 'Die Re-Marriage Charts' even have detailed notes about what Die Stage corresponds corresponds to each marriage, where lapping occurred, etc. It's really quite remarkable to be able to piece this type of info. together when you stop to think about it.

@topstuf, here are "three die stages in order," from earliest to latest:

1798 B-16, BB-110 Silver Dollar in a very early die state, with no sign of the die break that will soon be forming from the rim under the first star to the date.
    ....

    ....
1798 B-16, BB-110 Dollar in a late die state, with a die break from the rim under the first star to the tops of the 179 in the date. This is the Bolender Collection and Bolender Plate Coin for the obverse die. This is the second finest known example of the die marriage.
    ....

    ....
The 1798 B-16, BB-110 Dollar is struck from the latest die state known, with a heavy die cud formed from the rim under the first star towards the date. It is the finest known and only Mint State example of the die marriage.

I love die state progressions and late die states!
