My oldest son is a vet. Very gratifying response. Agree with consensus - dog first.

I am an animal "whisperer." I could have that "hell dog" grinning on his back waiting for a scratching in about two minutes w/o touching him! I explained this to a Canine Officer at an event when he sensed a big change in his dog's attitude around me.

For all you dog lovers. Do yourself a favor when buying toys for your precious
friend .Cut the squeaker out and also remove the buttons for eyes. And check
    nose.

Dog and cats come first. The last couple of years of my kitty Seryozha's life probably spent a couple of grand on teeth extractioins, various procedures - but I loved that cat more than most of my family members. He was a foul mouthed cat that you could rely on to gripe you out about everything - usually he was right too.

So lets say your dog is about 10 years old and has developed cataracts in both eyes.

Would you get LASIK surgery for Fido instead of buying another pricey coin?

It depends - does (or did) your dog help you assess coins?😉

    absolutely NO contest!!!
My dog will never cheat on me, will never ask for more than he needs, will always protect me if needed......and will always listen to me, he will unconditionally love me and he will ask for nothing in return, except food and drink.
YOU all get the drift!!! after all, he is a trained Sheppard... the other is a Aussie... one of the smartest animals I have ever had the honor to be with. :)<3
the hell with coins if that is the choice... someone might find a couple rolls of these "one of a kind" in the attic tomorrow....and, what then???
your dogs will still greet you with a rub around your legs when you get up....
    your coins????

I thought Lasik was to correct refractive problems by removing some corneal tissue, not touching the lens? (at least that's what they told me it was when I had it done a decade ago). In any case, before proceeding I would look at the dog's current level of function, how much that's being impacted by the vision problem, and the estimated life expectancy. Unfortunately the pooch's opinion can't be ascertained. These are tough judgement calls.
(FWIW, we spent about 10k having both knees of our wonderful shepherd mix repaired, and never gave it a second thought. She was otherwise healthy and enjoyed another 6 years or so).

I am not sure if technology has advanced or if you have a wrong term. Cataracts are clouding of lens and LASIK reshapes the cornea. So doing LASIK for cataracts would be a waste of money and not correct problem.

    https://bettervisionguide.com/lasik-vs-cataract-surgery/

Having said that, a vet recently told me about University of Florida Veterinary Med School doing open heart mitral valve repair surgery on dogs for $50K+. I was shocked and so was he and then he said they had a waiting list of over 50 patients.

This is Buddy while he was writing his famous book, Varieties of the Churchill Crown. He was known as the leading expert on Churchill Crowns and at the time owned the highest graded example (65). He taught a class at Summer Seminar. I once caught him counting the reeding on a Churchill because he had a theory on varieties among collar dies. Sadly. Buddy died from renal failure but I sold coins and borrowed from my retirement to keep him going. He was the best.
