I just got a recent sub back, and I had a lot of cards come back that I was very happy with. I also did a small case study. On my previous bulk sub I submitted the entire Heritage Action parallel set. Most I pulled from a case break I did. I was shocked with the amount of 9s I got on my sub. So I chose 6 of them cracked them and resubbed them. Pictures do not lie
I am not in anyway complaining, just a heads up to everyone out there that the Boogeyman is real and he strikes when you least expect it.

Well done, taking the human element into the equation nobody should disagree that grades can vary from time to time. Congrats on the upgrades

As long as human beings are conducting the grading, there is bound to be some variance in grades, especially in cases like this where the difference is so minimal for modern cards between a PSA 9 and a PSA 10 grade. If you cracked those 10s out and resubmitted them again, you might get all 10s or 9s again. Congrats on the 10s!

Great job on the crack and resubmit. The difference between a 9 and 10 on some modern cards has to be so slight that a grader having a stressful day might tend to give more 9's than 10's on any given day. Way to trust your own instincts. 6 for 6 is not easy to do. Congrats.

I have probably received around 40 PSA 10s through submissions over the last five years. In not one case was I expecting a 10 for that card any more than for surrounding cards which received 9s, nor do I discern any difference between the 10s and the nice surrounding 9s.
The 9/10 distinction is not definable to my eye, whereas the 8/9 distinction is very clear.
I don't think this in any way qualifies as a "grader of death" example. Going from a 9 to a 10 is not a big jump, had some of your 9's been 8's or 7's then I would have been surprised at the difference.

I see your point, but I have had card that were returned ungraded "miscut" come back as straight 8's. THAT I don't understand.
In the graders defense, those Heritage cards can be tough. I've looked at a bunch fresh pack pulls under my 60x loupe and I've noticed a lot of them come out of the pack with frayed corners, sharp, but frayed. Its the kind of card stock they use. Sometimes multiple white fibers stick out and some of the top of the card frays back off the cardboard. Its almost like the top of the card is lightly adhered to a sea of white fiber. Take the below example. This is a PSA 10 card I subbed. To the naked eye, I think its a 10. But look closely, the bottom right corner is a little chipped. I couldn't be mad is this came back a 9. However, I think the graders know most of these cards chip easily out of the pack and give a little leeway. I bet if you loupe your corners, they will look the same. I don't think its necessarily grader of death, just a grader that gave them a hard look over on the edges or corners. I think I got lucky, but now I know that these Heritage cards are sensitive to chipping and know what to look for. But like I said, most of the fresh pack pulls I have of these have this corner fray.

There's a difference between the MC qualifier and the N8 miscut no grade. For cards that get the MC qualifier, the miscut is visually evident (that is extremely OC). But the N8 miscut no grades are in the subjective opinion of the grader. Something like a funny cut on an edge may be ignored by one grader and called miscut by another. I too had a card returned as N8 which was a PSA 10 upon resubmission. Another one of those eye of the beholder things.

Years ago, I did three separate subs on a special. 25 each. They where a 70's and 80s, but mostly of three different issues I know like the back of my hand, all zero and low pops at the time. I had over 500, that I hand pulled from factory sets, rack, vending cases and cut case vending. Were handled to grade, and all perfect in my eyes. 75 were the best - 3 subs 25 each. I did three because we were complaining of G.O.D. back then as well. 2 subs were home runs, mostly 10s, 33% or so 9s, and one had a missed surface wrinkle. The other sub was OK at best. About 25% 10s, 25% 9s, 25% 8s, then a handful not graded for size. So I do believe in G.O.D. It probably isnt true, but I stage my subs so they arent graded all at once. And I try to spread out subs also,
