Comments

  • Jackie Uncirculated officially sold out!

  • All remaining spouse gold coins will be removed from US mint catalog this December.

  • Will Betty Ford uncirculated be the final key of All first Spouse coins? My guess is that About 1750 will be sold by the end of this year

  • FullStrikeFullStrike Posts: 4,353 ✭✭✭

I hope not. Not that it really matters much but look at the criticisms that surrounded the Jackie Robinson Coin. It was the low mintage " King" for a while but people said it was an "Ugly" Coin. Well , yeah it was ugly but we were talking about a Man on a Coin.

If the Betty Ford became the low mintage " Queen" would people still say the same bad things about how the Coin looked? Well.................. ummmm, whatever.

Truman, Johnson, Ford, Nixon and Reagan are all candidates to be added to the sub-2000 First Spouse subset.

This is the one coin series I don't worry about "leaking" low mintage info about. No one cares. :D

About the only thing I wonder about with these "candidate" coins is how many might sell if a final date for orders is ever given. I could see 200-300 sell really fast.

But I wouldn't bet on it. Maybe only a handful would go. Maybe these slugs are deader than a rock.

As far as demand goes, the key is more likely to be a proof. For commems and bullion coins, collectors generally prefer proofs, which typically outsell uncs. by 2-1 or more. In the later dates of the First Spouse series, the ratio is more like 5-4, but I think this is due to some investors/speculators chasing lower absolute mintages. Many later-date Spouses are currently bringing higher prices in proof than in unc., despite having slightly higher mintages. I think this price disparity reflects collector preferences.

  • At the end of this year, we will have multiple potential modern keys (some deep ones) to chase. It will be fun.

It looks like it'll all be over with the first spouse program by the end of the year. We still have a few new potential keys coming up.

For the UNC's. The proof key is known...

These spouse threads are wrought with disinformation and manipulation. It always amuses me to see the games people play. Once the series goes dark, there will be lots of love on the boards!!!

Perhaps this has been said several times before, but this series will stay dead as a brick until gold as a commodity takes off and elbows its way into popular attention/excitement.

Which is the proof key? Eleanor Roosevelt or Grace Coolidge? Eleanor goes for more but Grace has a lower mintage.

Whether a coin is key depends on demand as much as supply. Eleanor is much more well known and popular in her own right than Grace Coolidge, whom most people wouldn't even be able to identify.

    I "care".

Kiyote ... it appears at this point that the enormous popularity of Roosevelt has resulted in that coin currently being considered the "key" even if Coolidge ends up with a lower mintage.

Buy a common date first spouse coin for a few bucks over melt and hit it with a hammer-- it'll retain 90% of its value.

Drop a ms67 FB Mercury dime on the floor and you've got a pretty $16 coin.

None of the spousal final mintages have been released since 2011. It's possible if unlikely that Harding or Hoover is the mintage key.

Michigan will be proud of Betty Ford forever. Won't they? Hopefully? Please.

So even if a 400 coin surge happens, Michiganders might be a buyer at perhaps 80% of melt.

    Go for it.

I am primarily a collector of attractive coins.
I will flip bullion when I get bored.
I am bored with these even before I consider paying spot when I can get a Gold Buff or Eagle.
I would imagine many others like me have a priority list, even DimeMan, that doesn't include speculating on the next "low mintage" coin in an unappreciated and only a mother could love series.

When the PCGS FS coin(s) are NOT selling at $1,399 at the same time (with a last "true open bid" sale of $879 on a PCGS 70 grade coin)? I personally ignore those isolated reports the same as I would ignore a report that someone sold one at melt on the bay. Just my two cents. Wondercoin.

Looks like the Queen Eleanor Coin is about to become the Princess Eleanor Coin really soon. But no matter, all the FS Gold "Hags" ( no one uses that term anymore?) will be trading at melt. After 20 years of melting, they will still be selling at melt.

Just found some F.S. Junk from several years ago ( yawn ) in my stash of Mint stuff. They are totally uncool......... BUT ........ they are 1/2 oz of Gold. What's my best option for moving this type of stuff out?

If you have a 2008 PCGS Louisa Adams FS PR70 or MS70, or a 2009 Margaret Taylor PCGS FS MS70 I would be glad to pay you $500 above their melt value each to help you get rid of them.

U guys think Eleanor will retain a significant premium even if Nixon and Ford come in lower? She was very popular and still will b very low mintage. Curious what u all think.

Ford and Nixon not too much lower. Wonder if enough will be sold prior to sales end date to close gap or even go higher than Eleanor??

I believe Roosevelt will retain Significant premium either way. I also believe that it is possible that the last weeks sales end up being a surprise and Ford & Nixon end up over 2000 mintage. Nobody really know for sure. We will know in a few weeks.

Personally I think most all lower mintages mentioned are similar and a large part of the series has 70 populations in the 200-300 range. It will only take a few hundred new collectors to start to driving up demand. Just have to give it some time. Currently a complete set if First Strike is only available to about 70 collectors in the world. These may be hated, but try to actually start a complete set and you will find it is getting difficult to find sellers of several of these dates.

Ford and Nixon May have final mintage numbers around 1800. But it is too hard to estimate the quantity of last minute orders at this time.

Goldminers, sorry I never got into the 70 Slabbed Coins. When I talk about my junk Spouses I'm talking the truely terrible stuff - like Martha Washington for instance. Truely junk fit only for the melting pot.

I'm really embarased about jumping on the bandwagon back in the beginning. Some of the Spouses are OK . Some are nothing but a lump of Gold.

What makes Adams and Taylor 70's worth a premium?

I agree with you that the first ones were pretty bad and way too many minted. The 4 coin Liberty set is quite nice. Yes I got into the modern slabbed 70's, and don't really collect 69 moderns unless that is all I can find, and yes in many cases they are just worth melt.

They are worth a premium because a lot of collectors of modern coins prefer only graded 70's. And yes, many also prefer First Strikes, even though it is the same coin, they do sell for more and are in greater demand for registry sets. The Adams and Taylor are very hard to find in First Strike 70 grades. I have been looking for many years and still have not found some of these at a price I am willing to pay.
