Honestly - the sets are too small. I know they want to give you 4 cards per pack for everything but wouldn't you inherently sell more product to the (albeit limited amount of) set collectors these days if we had to buy 3 X as many boxes to make a set? You can keep the number of autos and inserts as is but, for example, the NBA has roughly 400 guys that play in a game every year. Basically every NBA set these days is 150 cards or less. i know advocating for more commons is stupid but putting together sets was something that I really enjoyed that's been taken away.

You forgot to include the response choice of "too many variations". Who cares if the border is pink, orange, purple, or camo, etc, or if its numbered to 2017, 99, 50, 25, 5, etc, or if it's a refractor, sparkle, gray back, or flipped color scheme etc, it's still the same dang card! Put that choice in your poll, in addition to the choice of "all of the above", and then mark me down for "all of the above".
I could perhaps go with one or 2 variations, similar to a 75 Topps mini, or a 69 Mantle white last name, etc, but I am turned off by the deluge of variations in modern collecting. Not a fan of the white card stock or glossy finish of cards from 1992- present, either. I understand the adage "to each his own", though. Everybody likes different things.

Agree too that there are way too many variations and serial #'d. Card companies are trying to create a sense of false scarcity by adding so many different low #'d prints like /1 /5 /10 /15 /20 etc.
Also, too many high end sets. It's watering down the patch/multi-colored gu/autograph market. Why pay high prices after a release when you can wait for another patch of player X to come out in a few months and get it cheaper.

actually, the most annoying aspect is relic cards. The fact that they destroy game used jerseys, bats as well as auto documents just for the purpose of making a card is pretty atrocious. I mean do you really have to destroy a game used bat/jersey used by the likes of Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, etc to make your stupid card?
It's a disgrace. I've had many conversations with other collectors about that very topic for years. It's incredible to me that HOF worthy museum pieces are allowed to be cut up and "destroyed" in order to make a card.
I voted for too many sets. This was especially true in the 90's and seems to have waned off a tad since then. As a solid 80's collector, I thought that 3 sets a year may have been a tad too thin in the early 80's, as the mid 80's rolled around I thought that was just enough..with some of the smaller subsets etc. Once the 90's came around, it was impossible to keep up with everything.
Nowadays, with Heritage being the only true modern product I like, I wish it wasn't so hard to compete a true master set...over 1000 cards or something to that effect?
I just think the whole "chase card" theme in general has jumped the shark, but I guess they don't think they can make enough in volume with cheaper products?

All the above, but 'too many sets' is my vote. Regular topps, bowman chrome, heritage, archives, gypsy, and etc. I could go on and on. I do like heritage and that is what I collect.

Yes..and auto pen....Seriously.....and all so confusing due to no guide as to whats out there as far as the variations, how many of what etc...Oh, and what is considered their true rookie card tho i guess thats for us collectors to decide? Among the 50-200 different candidates (diff cards) in one year for a rookie.
It's all just too much.
I thought this myself, until I decided to wade in and really see what's what; turns out, at least in my opinion, it's easy to navigate and I'm having a total blast with modern.
End of the day, there's no denying the thrill of collecting a player you can watch live, day in, day out.

I collect the Heritage sets and the relic cards are an abomination. First, it needlessly destroys an item to make a card desirable which drives up the price of the rest of the cards as the packs, boxes and cases become more expensive to purchase. While I'm standing on my soapbox, some of the prices on the variations i.e. in action and turn back the clock cards exceed a number of vintage cards. Maybe it's because I'd begun to collect them in order to build "master sets plus," but it seems now that the prices realized for Trout, Harper and the like are nonsensical.
