after some thought I believe the Buffalo Nickel represents our Countries current ideals pretty well.
on the obverse is a portrait of a Proud Man who was hunted, starved and herded onto plots of land hundreds of miles away from where his people historically lived. on the reverse is an animal which at one time numbered in the millions: it was systematically exterminated in part to accomplish what was done to the other side of the coin.
how ironic it is that we place the word "Liberty" in front of the obverse portrait, as if to taunt that figure with what was so arrogantly robbed from him. we didn't do much better on the reverse, placing the words "E Pluribus Unum" suspended above the Buffalo which was nearly hunted to extinction. yeah, out of many one, that about sums it up.
