This sale was a bit disappointing for me in that I won two lots, but they weren't what I really wanted. But, being my first time bidding on Kuenker and not knowing what to expect (the frequent web site timeouts were absolutely unexpected and annoying!), I did not bid aggressively. I was guided by someone, but nevertheless I essentially bid blind. I hope I won't be disappointed with the quality of my newps. (I was told by my advisor that Kuenker tends to be very conservative with their grading.)

Those are stil some nice purchases. I'm particularly impressed by the portrait on the 2nd coin.
I personally haven't gotten around to bidding at any Kuenker auctions yet. My understanding is that they grade conservatively, but that doesn't stop their auctions from commanding very high prices. Collector's have said there is an extra Kuenker tax by virtue of the fact that coins seem to sell more there than they would at lower profile auctions.

Those are very nice (I especially like the detail on the reverse of the second). I've always been quite satisfied with the medals I've won from Künker so far.

I would like to hear more about that 1 1/2 punch on obverse of the Braunschweig piece if known. Is that a revaluation or simply confirming the original intended value?
Keunker has been a source for my collection. It is true that they get TOP dollar for coins . I won only 1 of 4 that I placed bids on. That loser is a cherry. Great provenance.

That 1-1/2 punch is a stipulation of value. It does not re-value, nor does it confirm (it assumes that the weight is accurate). I guess it would be hard to differentiate between a 1-1/4 or 2 just from eyeballing.
These coins, called löser (not "loser"!!!), are like ornate equivalents of bullion that one may see in a Federal Reserve facility and subject to recall by the local government in times of war to pay for soldiers and other common services. The stamp on these coins is just like the stamp on a gold bar: it neither re-values nor confirms; rather, it asserts a value.
It's not clear if all such multiple talers are löser pieces. Lot 1191 of the same auction is a 2T yet is simply a doppel Reichstaler: Davenport 398.
And, an Italian dealer told me that the 30 Tarí (equivalent to a 2T) pieces from the Kingdom of Sicily are like the German löser pieces. So this was not just a German custom. And, if you will note, the Saxony and Sicily pieces do not have the value mark stamped onto the die nor the coin.

The German convention at times is to use an 'oe' in lieu of an o with umlaut. For instance, the 1914 Bavarian 2, 3, 5, and 20 Marks use the spelling Koenig in Ludwig's titles.
