How long is too long for Express Grading???

I've had a coin in-process since May 25th with PCGS for cross-over express grading. As of today it is on the 15th business day. Their stats say it is running at 8 business days. I have called several times on status as well as looked on-line and it's still in-process. PCGS is using the excuse that several graders were at the show last week and it slowed everything down. Should I be paying for express service if they can't deliver express service? Anyone else have these types of issues with the twice as costly Express service?

I would call them to make sure there are no problems with the form, payment, etc. Fifteen plus business days for an express seems a bit much.

Are there any attributions on the coin? If not, 3 weeks is terrible!

Good point. You should raise it next time you call PCGS about the coin.

I agree that when they don't honor their stated time period, some refund is in order. It's not a good business practice to create an expectation and then completely miss the mark.

Not sure if it matters but did you label the box as express?

It's the ebb and flow of grading, some weeks they are churning them out with expedient speed...other times it seems to be at the speed of continental drift. I called a few hours ago about my order (regular cross-over submission) and was advised (again) that it should be turned in the next day or two. This is the third week that I have heard that line.

Your express order has merit on an explanation and possible compensation.

As it is the last 2 weeks of a quarter where submissions are down substantially from last year, they will make every effort to get as many coins out as possible before the quarters end.

Nothing special about my submission. I marked it as Express on the package. It is an 1881 shield nickel graded by NGC as MS64 (I said on the form I would accept MS63 or above). I've been told, for the last 1 1/2 weeks that it has been graded, but is with the finalizer to confirm the grade. There is no variety/attribute service for the coin.

    not a huge jump in price. $1400 at 63, $1950 at 64

I had an economy pop today that was logged in on 5/19 which seems very reasonable. Too long for an express IMO, maybe see if they can offer any freebies.

Waste of money using express. Same thing happened to me years ago. Never again.

We have an Express Invoice that was logged in on May 12th that is not done. There is nothing "tricky" about this particular invoice either. We have economy invoices logged in on the same day which are already done. Unfortunately this is not uncommon and frankly, if you get the grades you're hoping for, they can take their time IMO. It's when they're slow and then you get crappy grades to boot that really sucks!

I just had a raw regular coin submission post grades on business day 10 so for express that's no bueno.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

I waited well over two months for the 1795 flowing hair dollar to get back from PCGS. That is what I refer to as TOO long and then some.

My frustration is overflowing as well, I keep paying more for grading and getting coins back slower. It used to be that once they received it, would get logged that day or next, now you can wait several days for it to even show up. As a comedian said, C'mon, mmaannn! Really? I am paying like $200 to get 2 coins graded (Including shipping and handling), I want it done relatively on time..but in this lies the rub (no pun intended), there is no time guarantee (it's a time guideline), so you could pay $100 or $30 and get your coins in the same amount of time. Anyhow, it kind of stinks if you want to get 2 coins graded, and even in the express tier it's like a month+ (realistically) when you count shipping there and back.

PS. Patience is not a virtue I have when I buy services, self admittedly. I pay more for speed in pretty much most of my life...I even paid for Global Entry at the time because it guaranteed me TSAPre. Now you can get TSAPre other ways, and I'm saying, they need to develop something even faster than TSAPre, and I'd be the first in line to buy it :)

Too long? From the time I mail the package, until I get home

one order I have in is reholder (five days) with variety attribution (3-5 days). So what, ten days max? It's business day 22 now.

Express still says 8 days as of right now, so who is getting their Express in 1-3 days? Cause some would have to since mostly everyone I know is at day 10+...and Regular is at 27 days? That's 1.5 months...so why even state that it's 15 days on the order form? Kind of silly...

that's my point too. Don't promise something (the times on the form) if you can't even come CLOSE to delivering.

Here's the thing....PCGS no longer guarantees turnaround times, and that is why the turnaround times are labeled as being "Estimated." Unlike airlines, hotels and rental cars, PCGS does not have customers make reservations in advance of sending in their coins, so they can only look at historical trends to expect how many coins may get submitted during any time period.

I have had frustrations with this myself on quite a few occasions, most recently with an express submission taking over 3 months. That being said, my record for an express submission came out to be about 9 months.

When it's coin show season, graders attend the shows, and so there are fewer graders left at the home office. The Long Beach show ended last week, and now the Baltimore show will be next week. As a result, "estimated" turnarounds will likely exceed "targeted" turnaround times for the next few weeks.

I understand your point. I suggest if PCGS were to change the expectation by changing the forms, people would have less dissatisfaction.

My Collectors Club attribution special for this quarter was logged in May 20... attributions of existing coins, no grading, and I told them what the easy-to-recognize varieties are. The cert. numbers haven't even been updated with the new variety attributions, which means they haven't been looked at yet. I truly feel special. :/

    When in doubt, don't.

    I can understand your frustration.

It seems I even forget that I have coins out to be graded. Then, when the thought of having coins out comes to mind I've needed to check my account to see if I did have a submission there.

I no longer pay extra for faster service unless it's a very high value coin since I've seen members post getting coins returned that were posted at Pcgs 7-10 days later than mine.
