passed away early this morning after a long illness at 81 years of age. He was my long time friend and colleague and was the founder of Golden Eagle Coin Exchange, now in Laurel MD. His son Bob, Jr. and Rich Stelfox were his partners. GECE is now in their third location and each got continually larger.

We went to shows and were very friendly competitors since the middle 1960's. The relationship went far beyond numismatics as we socialized frequently, attending many family functions together.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Patricia, and by his son and daughter, Tina, as well as sisters, six grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and hundreds of friends who will lovingly remember him. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete.

PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

    He must have been a leading numismatist and all around great person. Next major coin show I go to I will have to make a point of interacting with dealers on a more personal basis, rather just on numismatics. My sympathy goes out to his family.

    Holy cow, we are all getting up there in age Julian. My condolences.

    Recently, some of us here in FL made a list of the many coin shops and dealers in the DC area from the 1960's to 1990 when I left town for good. I remember Bobby was a cut-up and very sharp dealer. Always treated me well. When I was a collector, he was one of the mainstays (as are you) of the DC area coin shows. Is Richie still with the company? I will echo Logger's post. Think I'll visit a bit with long-time dealers at shows rather than wave as I rush buy.

    I've dealt with Golden Eagle for a long time and they are very professional and personable.
    I am sorry to hear of Mr. Mangels' passing and I offer my condolences to his family and many friends.

    I remember him from PAN shows some years back although GECE hasn't set up there for a while. Always pleasant and energetic. Condolences to his family and those who knew him.

    New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Thank you for sharing a life of a fellow numismatist that while we never knew, we will now know, that he will be missed. Most dealers have become specialists over the years and their contribution deserves recognition.
