Believe it or not: It's Friday. METAL PORN DAY!

Very little again this week :(

I did manage another Maria Theresa thaler. These were arguably the first silver round ever made. First minted by Austria in the 1740s. In 1857 the MT thaler was named an "official trade coinage". A year after that, it lost its status as currency in Austria--essentially making it a free floating bullion piece valued by its silver weight rather than its legal tender denomination. Since 1780, they have always had the date "1780", so don't be fooled by their antique look and date.

Over 400,000,000 of these coins have been made by mints around the world. :o

From Wiki: The thaler is 39.5-41 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick, weighs 28.0668 grams and contains 23.3890 grams (0.752 troy ounces) of fine silver. It has a silver content of .833 and a copper content of .166 of its total millesimal fineness.

This piece caught my eye because it's got deep cameo mirrors. They do make proof MT thalers, and this one appeared with another that was clearly not proof like. So I guess it's possible it was from a proof/unc set. Regardless, I thought it was neat and who can pass up a big, flashy chunk of silver for melt plus a buck?

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

For being just 4 serial numbers apart, the numerical fonts sure do look very different!
