Thanks Jeff. It hasn't been that long ago an AU58 set was not possible. When I started my set there was not a 97-S graded AU58. I have to wonder if the lone AU58 1901-S Quarter is still in an AU58 holder! A quarter set in 58 would be a heck of an achievement!

Both nice but I like the 1898 best. Congrats!

    Darrell-

Here's a trip down memory lane for you. Several years ago you sold me your 1894 S Half on an OGH XF 45:

After deliberation I cracked it out and submitted to our hosts raw; it came back in a 55 holder:

I sold the coin a few years back, but I kept the photos.

Jeff,I still l liked it in the OGH 45 holder! But I understand why you cracked it with it going into your registry set for awhile!

  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

My pictures can't do the 94-S justice! But I also like the 98 better!

Thanks for sharing, Jeff. Makes you wonder WTH was going on in the
Host's Grading Room back then. Missing a coin's grade by 10 Points
    is unconscionable.

    Ok, I can see missing a Plus Grade - or a 3 - 5 point spread - but not 10.
Loosing confidence in our Hosts' graders is step one of no longer having
coins certified.... either hire "better" expert graders - raise the fees to cover
their expertise - or loose your clientele. JMHO.

That is an interesting 94-S story. 10 point swings are uncommon thankfully. I would say it's a 50. I bet if you sent it in without cracking it out it wouldn't be a 55 now.

  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

You need to look more closely at the coin in the 45 holder. The 2nd set of pics are washed out. I have had several barber Half's upgrade 10 points.... 1 15 points! When PCGS gets in tough mood they can be brutal on Barber Half's!

I bought this one in a 30 holder awhile back and it was not in an older holder!
