Welcome again @OwenSeymour
I've been quiet here but I admire your enthusiasm.................and your ability to answer questions here in a timely manner.
I'm sure you will be a great dealer.

The ANA needs to start promoting the hobby the way that @OwenSeymour is! Social media is the cheapest and most effective way for young kids to get interested. The ANA should be creating a facebook group or start posting digital flyers for an ANA show, summer seminar on Instagram or Facebook. Have a weekly thread on Reddit talking about a historical coin, numismatic fact or a cheap giveaway. Even APMEX does it...
Social media is "free" (as long as you don't mind the hosting company collecting your data) and you can reach more people with a single tweet, instagram picture, facebook post or reddit thread than a newspaper or billboard. Why do you think these social media companies have valuations in the BILLIONS of dollars while the NYT and every other newspaper is failing? Do you think wall street is stupid?
Collectors keep on wondering how to get younger people into coins and this is the way to do it: Instagram, Facebook, Reddit and Twitter. I find it ironic that @OwenSeymour is met with naysayers and hostility when he shares his experience and then people complain that kids don't want to walk into a coin show or local coin shop. Why bother getting the stink eye or rude attitude when you can find cheaper, nicer and a wider variety of coins online and not get hassled while doing it?
If Owen was smart (and it seems like he very much is), he should pitch an idea to the ANA or other numismatic businesses to post paid promotions to his 6,000 followers. According to him, he has the largest captive, targeted numismatic audience on Instagram with a traceable way to see how many views a post gets. He could plug the ANA, PCGS, large coin shows, numismatic publications or online dealers and charge a flat fee for a post or by the number of views a post gets.
Keep up the good work Owen
I agree that more numismatic groups need to become more active on social media. And very interesting idea about reaching out to offering advertisement on my Instagram - I'm going to think about that for sure!
I've been saying for years that the ANA needs to ramp up social media if they ever want to truly reach where the younger generation of collectors live. Convential ways are outdated and don't fit the way this generation rolls.

Walker Proof Digital Album Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I feel like social media is a logical extension of a dealers online presence. Years ago dealers that didn't embrace the idea of using a website to sell coins missed out on an opportunity...seems like the same situation for dealers today with social media.
Whever someone's asks what should the ANA do to improve the hobby somebody always answers more education for YN's. Summer sessions Colorado Springs etc. Who's going to argue against that? However, social media will give you more bang for your buck. It will be more engaging and reach more YN's quicker. It will be accessible to more people. Young and young at heart.

Somehow missed this lively thread! From what I've seen, @OwenSeymour, @boyernumismatics and several others are on the up and up when it comes to selling coins. More power to them on finding another way to keep the hobby alive and well. Looks like I'll need to look up Ricko and a few others on this thread too! Never hurts to have a few more followers and followees!
As for me, I don't sell anything at all, just like to post pictures of coins - today's posting from me is a PCGS XF-45 1869 Seated dollar. It's also fun to see postings from coins around the world. I can understand filtering your followers if you're running a business, but for me I'll block someone if they keep pestering or spamming me, or if they have an account with lots of 'followers' with no postings of their own.
Not surprised to see a couple of cranks in this thread, but they are in every business.
Social media, there are hordes of coin collecting and bullion stacking videos on YouTube. My favorite is Numistacker. How about ANA, and the PCGS boards, having pages/sections for posting videos by any collectors or dealers? Isn't it part of the new wave of social media? Owen are the YN's enthusiastic about numis videos?

If they don't, others will. Coin collecting will continue, the only variable will be who will lead the hobby.
Nevermind my question. I'm retiring and I wish you the best.
Aren't there 2 sides to retiring ?
Yes, Between us , we have 5 children in their 20's and 30'a, and 11 grandchildren ranging from months to 10 years..., with one on the way.
Gonna help 'em (grandchildren) fill up some Statehood quarter albums, pretty soon. ... And trying to get one each (grandchildren) a Gold Buffalo Proof for their birth year. That is proving to be expensive ...like running the brick & mortar.
I do hope those who take up the trade (business professionals) remain fair and honest. Always be wiling to buy what you sell. No questions asked.
