1968 Topps set....COMPLETED!!!

After almost 20 years, I finally picked up the last card for my NM-MT+ 1968 set. Technically this was an upgrade to my NM copy. Every card was hand picked for corners and centering. My mom got me hooked on this set one summer afternoon in 1988 when she bought me the Carew #80 in VG condition. I still have that card but picked up a Mint one a few years ago. Thank you to all of you who helped me along the way.

WOW Congratulations! I picked up a 1968 Topps set to re-sell a few years back, but there is just something about building a set yourself. It fulfills something in you. I'm sure you have a tremendous feeling of satisfaction.

This is awesome. I love my raw set chase, which I recently finished out my 1970 set. I've got a ways to go with my 68 set, but you have given me some good motivation!

I've gone through looking for the color variation on the back and don't see any. Even before I knew about MB's, I hated the faint yellow backs and would avoid them. Yet another reason why it took me 20+ years to finish.
My 20 year 68 project is down to about 10 cards, one of them #177. I started out EX-MT, but a have received a lot of lesser grades, so I think my set is mostly EX. That is a great job you did, finding that set in that grade is awesome. Congrats! Are they going in a binder?

My preference would be to go for quality,the 1969 set in NMMT. In cards and coins, and any other collectible, quality usually wins out in the long run. Especially in resale.

I've been working on a 63F BB set since 04 and still haven't completed - only 67 cards; when I started, I was more than happy with 60/40 - but now? 55/45 or better - which is a big challenge.
Did you keep any kind of journal of your experiences along the way?

I know the feeling. Initially, my set was going to be all raw, but then PSA was founded and graded cards became all the rage. So then, I transitioned into doing the set in all PSA 8, but then missed the fun of looking through a binder. So, it ended up about 80% raw centered Mint and 20% PSA 8 (which included all major stars).
I didn't keep a formal journal, per se, but I did keep track of money spent and cards bought just for kicks. Seeing prices skyrocket really makes me wish I had finished the set sooner.
Back in '99, I bought a large chunk of my set from a former SCD writer, Frank Barning. We struck up a great conversation while I painstakingly sorted through his cards and he ended up writing an article about my set and i. I'd love to reconnect with him if anyone knows him.
