Received coin today and didn't get anything remotely close to the same coin as the auction. I don't even know if this is real or counterfeit? Needless to say it will be going back.

What I recieved.
Surfing the Bay the other day and came across this. Listed as "1889 Morgan Dollar" liked the look of it so decided I would bid. Checked out the sellers other items for sale and noticed he/she doesn't deal in coins very much at all, wondered if it was possible the seller wasn't aware to check for a MM. So I started taking a look thru vamworld to see I could match the obverse to a MM. There might be other possibilities but one good match was for an 1889 CC vam 2, it matches the date placement, it also has the high 9 and maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me but am I seeing faint line/doubling on the crossbar on the 1? So anyone out there care to give their opinion? Could I have a nice score on my hands or is it wishful thinking?

I would need to see both sides of the coin before I even think about putting any money down. The reverse may be planed off (love token), or damaged in some other way.
I thought that I heard/read somewhere that eBay requires both sides of a coin and the holder label for any listing???

What are the odds that an 1889-cc tones like that vs the other mint marks for that year? The majority of CC mints tend to be white...... keeping the odds fairly low that this one is a CC. Then again, what is the downside if you're wrong? $10-20? $50?
Any seller looking to put such a Morgan up for sale on Ebay would be hard pressed not to notice that many of them have mint marks. The price guides would show that too.
It does appear to be in some kind of holder but nothing was mentioned in the auction. Did not pay any crazy $$ for this, so not a big deal at all if it ends up being a P or O mint. Just fun to speculate.

Not a bad strategy to sell similar common coins without showing the reverse. No fraud certainly and it may bring a couple extra bucks from the curious.
Very little chance. The seller at least knew it was a "Morgan Dollar". Typically anyone who would come across a coin like this would most likely search the 'net for a price guide and see the various prices for the mint marks. Anyway, if you paid under $40 then worst case is a few bucks for the thrill.
With CC's I think it's easier to determine the year by the reverse not the reverse by the year.

Looks like an the old, hard, white PCI insert from the 1990's. Therefore, no chance of CC.
He stated in the original post that it's the only photo provided in the auction.

His completed feedback shows that he's listed several coins with mintmarks (does not show reverses) in title.

He sold the exact same 1888 Morgan 6 times in the last few months. Not sure what is going on there.
Well if it ends up be an "O" mint-mark, you hit pay-dirt.
I vote '89_P VAM 7. The high 9 is the tip-off. The date position is also an exact match. When it arrives, check for slight doubling of the back edge of the ear cavity, and some die polishing lines between the rear base of the eagle's neck and the top edge of the wing.

That's is not the same coin above it. AND it's a total fake. Call ebay, file a SNAD, don't return the coin, and out the dirty tricks seller.

Classic "show a stolen pic, send a fake" pattern here. A little research in this guy's feedback comments might have raised a few flags. This guy's gotten several neuts and negs for selling Chinese fake Magpul parts etc. Something tells me he's getting his inventory on Alibaba, including his coin inventory.

Didn't expect to see that heavy rev die crack from rim to eagle's head on a fake. The coin is ruined whatever it is. It certainly isn't the same one as shown on Ebay.
Their feedback rating of 98.8% (and soon to drop another 0.02% lower....lol) is at the bottom of the trough, esp. with nearly 6,000 FB's. Anything less than 99.8% and I get concerned.
I opened a request to return yesterday immediately after seeing what was in the package, have yet to hear anything back from the seller. Ebay says he has until the 27th to respond. First item off Ebay that I've returned since joining in 2000! If I take a chance on an auction and it turns out not to be as nice as I think I would just eat it, but not with something like this.
I just noticed his 12 negs for using photos of real items and then shipping knockoffs, but he is a top rated seller!

That is the most lame bait and switch I've ever seen. At least here we know who the dirtbag is. File a SNAD. Make sure that you save a screen shot of the coin imaged in the listing before the creep deletes it.

Several years ago I "bought" the coin pictured and received the same counterfeit as you. The coin I received was shipped from China. Did you check the postmark on the packaging you received the coin in?
This stuff angers me on so many levels.
5000+ positives is too many to be a crook.

Reminds me of a mess I have been dealing with.
Not long ago, I was holding over $20K in some poor guy's credit cards.
I have been dealing with a crazy identity theft/credit card ring. Strangers mail (and credit cards) started arriving from all over the country to my warehouse. Same with several neighboring businesses.
I found the victims via Facebook and Google in like 10 minutes and alerted them or called the banks issuing the CC's. That is pretty frightening in and of itself.
Worse, the local Postmaster told me for a small fee, anyone can go online and do a change of address on anyone. It was rampant and they were overwhelmed. Local police did not consider it a crime until a card had been actually used.
Something to consider as a coin collector/dealer. It would have taken these victims weeks to realize their mail was being re routed.
Gives me chills.
I don't hold my breath except the fact that they are screwing with the government this time...

I'm not so sure of that. A 98% FB rate with that many transactions is abysmal. Some sellers rely on buyers that once ripped off, either don't know they were ripped, or are too embarrassed or lazy to bother to file a neg/complaint. Be leery of any FB rating under 99.8%. Those negs/neutrals were earned for a reason. And very few buyers actually complain about it. In my mind, 88 negs/neutrals is FAR too many to be anything but a big "problem" and a large red flag....no matter the status of the account.
