Automatic vs. paid attribution on submission

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,891 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is still sometimes baffling to me on varieties that should be asked for vs. those that are automatic. Is this generally a Red Book vs. a company policy issue?

A collector recently sent in these coins on my account, and then earlier in the week he said when they were checked in at PCGS for economy grading some of the overdates were not listed. He then mentioned the few that may or may not require paid attribution. I called PCGS and they said you need to go to the population figure page then click on the "plus" square on the left to reveal unpaid varities. Is there any easier way to do this? This is the group he sent in.

I always use the plus sign, get the PCGS Coin number and write it on the submission form.

Attribution is not automatic. I have email and called PCGS Customer Service about Major Varieties versus die varieties (FS numbers apparently) to get a straight answer...same old script, each variety attribution is $18, if the coin variety is not recognized, then only half of the attribution fee will be charged.

I am confused here. There are major varieties which IF you denote the proper PCGS coin number for that particular major variety on your submission form, there are no extra fees. If you do not denote the major PCGS coin number for that particular major variety ...I am not sure they will attribute it. Now Cherry Picker #'s, FS, Vams. etc...you must put the PCGS number down and the cash to have to attributed. No attribution fees, no attribution. Thats why cherry pickers find coins in PCGS that are varieties and no attribution. Does this help???

Simply go to the PCGS Price Guide. A major variety that does not need to paid to have attributed has it's own coin number and is listed separately in the main price guide. Any coin that falls under the + listing does require you to pay for the attribution. Also, those coins listed under the + sign, are FS listed varieties, meaning they are listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide Book. If a variety is not listed in the CP book, then you won't be able to get the attribution other than getting a generic "Minor Variety" listing on the holder.

Simplest thing to do is just write down the coins denomination date and mint, if it's a major variety listed in the price guide, they will automatically check for it and attribute it at no charge. If it's a CP/FS variety, just list the FS# in variety section of the submission form. They will then check it for you. If the coin is the variety they will then list the variety on the holder.

OK, thanks. So will I need to ask for varieties on the 1918 s/s half and the 1944 no AW monogram half with the 1944 listed in Breen? Or are these automatic?

1918-S 50C - No Varieties listed (not recognized)
1944 50C no AW - No Varieties listed (not recognized)

These would receive "Minor Variety" at best, $18 attribution fee (half price ($9) April - June 2017)

To the best of my knowledge.

If you want one of the "free" varieties attributed, explicitly put that coin number and description on the submission form. If the coin comes back not attributed, then you can show you filled out the form correctly and it becomes a mechanical error. If you were silent about the variety on the submission form (e.g., to suppress the coin's value for service level), then getting the attribution added is another submission should they leave it off for whatever reason.

Thanks, I'll let Don know, he doesn't do much on the internet.

Don seems to think these three coins without the attribution he wants will not be worth much of a premium:

    6 1 In Process In Process 1918-S 50C
    7 1 In Process In Process 1918-D 50C
    8 1 In Process In Process 1944 50C

So he contacted PCGS and asked them not to grade the coins since he can't get the attribution he wants. I will probably just have PCGS do that, but he could put some type of attribution on the coins himself on the holder. Does NGC also not attribute those? (1918 s/s half and the 1944 no AW monogram half with the 1944 listed in Breen.)

NGC - No (1918-S/S) and yes (1944 No AW)

    Variety Diagnostics
Polishing of the die to remove clash marks or erosion lines obliterated the designer's monogram. This is more correctly known as a die state, rather than a true variety.

At one time, the automatics were the major ones listed in the redbook.

A dealer said they may need to go through the "errors" attribution. Would that make any sense here?

Probably the best way to find out is to ask our host at a show they attend. Calling customer service is a crap shoot trying to get a straight answer oout of them. The error comment does not sound right...if it is, error attribution is even higher than varieties.

The published, official word, on varieties is at this link. (Which is really probably only a starting point....),

Your savior for the Walker varieties might be FS numbers in the Cherry Picker's Guide. I don't know for a fact that your varieties are in Cherry Picker's....but it sounds like something that might be.

So an error coin like this would be tough to get on the holder? http://i.imgur.com/ZrKRh3y.jpg Lamination, not noted when PCGS graded it F12.
