A local coin dealer, who goes to England every year, told me that at the end of 2017 the current one £ coins will no longer be accepted. The two £ coins will still be good. Can anyone confirm this?

P.S. the new forum allows one to type £

What is it with so many European Countries? Demonetizing there coins is nothing short of stealing in my opinion! Anyone care to do the math on how much money the European countries have stolen from people around the world? Try to spend a large denomination note in Switzerland and you will likely be having an incident with the police!

    Totally agree. It's quite stupid!

The belief is that currently one in four round pound coins is counterfeit. .

Bank of England also demonetizes their old notes after a new series is issued. On a happier note, according to the Royal Mint, the crown was revalued from 5 shillings to 5 pounds in 1990. So lets take our all old Churchills over and go shopping!

A few will grandfather old coins and currency. I know most German coins and currency from 1950 onward (at least West German and then Unified German) can still be exchanged at the Central Bank for Euros. Ireland and Denmark I think also have done this - at least for post WWII coins.
