Help appreciated from the forum.... I am looking to build my library out of notable and reference worthy collections which featured exceptional Spanish Colonial and Latin American material.

Thus far I have noted:
Norweb
Alexander Patterson
Emilio Ortiz
Pablo Gerber
Byron Huie
Mayer
Caballero de las Yndias
Millennia

One could add Lissner, Rudman, D. Moore or other recent sales but Im more curious of historical references.

Moore was highly overrated in my opinion.

Gerber is actually 3 sales. Caballero is 4. Millennia is 3 (all the same day).

I don't think Mayer has any Colonials, all Republic.

The Sotheby's London gold sales from the early 90s, a little-known series of about 10 sales with selections of excellent Latin American gold salted in each. Many people think it was an old European bank hoard being disbursed, but no one really knows where the coins came from. Many high-grade rarities appeared for the first time (maybe more Republic than Colonial).

Peltzer, a Glendinings sale from the 1920s (maybe more Republic than Colonial).

    Farouk.

Rudman has a nice Colonial sale via Cayón in 2004.

Other Cayón sales like von Shuckman (?) in 2001.

All the Ponterio sales. Ditto the Henry Christensen sales (1952-1990s). Ditto Superior Galleries starting with Pradeau in 1970 to 2002-ish. Ditto Coin Galleries (world division of Stacks).

    Hans Schulman sales.

Lots of obscure sales in the 60s-80s and one-offs of US auctioneers. I like Bowers & Ruddy, Bowers & Merena, and ANR. Stacks too.

Eliasberg world gold sale at ANR (2005?).

Sorry, I'm doing this from memory as my library is in storage.

Not sure if these would apply, but they may be interesting.

I also have been working on my Spanish Colonial library, though, not really knowing the best way to go about it, I've gone off in a slightly different direction. If you get the chance, I'd love to hear more about how you will use the older auction catalogs, say as opposed to online auction data. I'm always looking for new ways to explore this area of numismatics and there seems to be a limited amount of information, at least for a non-spanish speaker/reader.

I'll take some cover shots of the materials I've compiled. I know you have some of the same already, such as Gilboy.

The link directly below takes a couple of seconds to load, just be patient - it does work

These are the published works that I've managed to gather together thus far for my library, along with a number of more recent auction catalogs from Heritage and other auction houses, as well as some various digital files.

All in all though, Gilboy's Milled Columnarios of Central and South America is my favorite book.

I wish there were a few more current books dealing with both reales and escudos. (In english, as I struggle with Spanish)

If anyone has other suggestions that would be worthwhile to pursue please suggest them.

UPDATE - Brad Yonaka's new book on fractional pillar coinage of Mexico is a wonderful addition!

  • Hello,

I just want to say that I personally know the collector "Caballero de las Yndias". In fact, I interviewed him ( http://blognumismatico.com/2012/06/13/entrevista-a-caballero/ in Spanish).

    All the best,
    Adolfo

You might also want to consider RI Nesmith's book, "The Coinage of the First Mint of the Americas at Mexico City, 1536 – 1572" [ANS Numismatic Notes & Monographs No. 131]

guess I missed this last time...

Guttag Collection of Latin American Coins arranged by Edgar Adams originally published 1929 republished 1974 Quarterman Publications

The Coinages of Latin America and the Caribbean, E A Furber, Quarterman Publications - this is a collection of work from the 1958 through the 1960s and assembled a single book around 1974

I got this other book on countermarks but that is not as topical in terms of what was asked for

1936 Emilio Carles Tolra collection of Spanish Colonial gold is epic. Two large books, one description, one plates.

1975 Superior ANA sale of FCC Boyd
March 2002 Numismatica Ars Classica sale which I believe is a major part of Don Canaparo's collection
    Hammel sale in Stacks 1982
The March 31st 1981 sale from Freeman Craig is pretty impressive
The 1984 Amon Carter sale has some cool pieces
The Swiss Bank sales has some important offerings:
    - Sellschop
    - Ortiz
    - Haberthauer

I just ordered SIEGFRIED VON SCHUCKMANN COLLECTION OF LATIN AMERICAN COLONIAL 8 REALES. Madrid, Dec. 13, 2001

    Anyone familiar with this sale?

I think you have to include the Kent Ponterio Collection of Charles and Johanna, Ponterio August 2009. Pages and pages of exceedingly rare coins!

Added this one as well the one you said to purchase.

I am confused my world coin price guide only lists pillar dollars minted in Mexico. Are these coins also part of Mexico like the coins from 1823 to 1897? Would the NGC or PCGS slab state Mexico then the city on the label?

No, they are from the countries listed on the book. Pillar dollars were made in Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Bolivia, Colombia and Chile.

Thanks now things are clear. What about those made from 1823-1897? I ask because when I look say at a coin minted in Potosi the NGC label will say Mexico then the abbreviations of Potosi and the assayer.

San Luis Potosi which minted Cap & Rays coinage is a different mint than Potosi Bolivia

The intent of this thread was to dig into some of the notable collections, not sure if you want to start a new thread on books but seemingly this is off track now.

Do t delete them, just trying to keep the discussion to collections. Start a new thread perhaps to keep the discussions you want to have going and I’m happy to help
