I'm not familiar with any significant change to the 1916 dime.....But you could be right. (I'll let the Mercury Experts chime in). I do seem to recall something....

But the classic examples of mid-year changes are the 1913 Buffalo, and 1917 Standing Liberty Quarters. They both got significant, and very easily identifiable changes.

1921 Morgan silver dollar, 1921 Peace silver dollar

  • I think this would be a good side collection that shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

I see what you're saying....."Not change to a design".....but, "Complete change OF design"....

That might take a little more thinking.... ;)

    • 1839 Bust Half changed to the 1839 Seated Half
    • Same for 1838 Bust Quarter and 1838 Seated Quarter
    • 1807 Draped Bust Half changed to 1807 Capped Bust Half.
    • 1938 Buffalo Nickel, 1938 Jefferson Nickel
    • In short, I think you'll find quite a few instances. I probably only scratched the surface.

Oh, that was going to be my answer.

    How about Statehood quarters?
They changed 5 times per year.

One of my favorites, that I'm trying to complete:

    1828 Half Cent, 13 stars
    1828 Half Cent, 12 stars

I think that was just an "Oops"...but it tickles me. ;)

1834 Quarter Eagles and Half Eagles

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

    1916 Barber Quarter to SLQ.......

But now it occurs to me that you mean changes to a single design. Nevermind. :)

I guess virtually every variety falls into this category.

Also in 1982 the Lincoln went to the Zincoln. Many of each type exist.

Probably the best way to find most, if not all, would be to go to any price guide, and run through the years. By definition, they will list all years for each design. Any overlap will give you another example.

1793 large cents had numerous changes:
Ameri. vs- America chain cent is minor.
Chain cent to Wreath cent is major
Wreath cent to Liberty Cap is major.

1795 started out with thick planchets, Lettered edges
Due to rising copper costs and shortages, switched to thin planchets, Plain edges.

1795 Flowing Hair Dollars changed in the second half of 1795 (as best we know) to the new Draped Bust, Small Eagle Type. This type was struck 1795-1798.

1798 Draped Bust, Small Eagle Dollars to 1798 Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle Reverse Dollars. Probably mid-year 1798.
