Jefferson Nickel Re-engraved Dies
Does anyone have pics of any of the Jefferson 5c Re-engraved Dies listed by CONECA? I was mainly interested in the 1938 varieties but would also like to see the 1952-54.
Thanks!
Thanks!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
<< <i>There's a CONECA article on the 1938's written by CaptHenway here, and an old thread here. >>
Thanks for the links kranky! I'll read the entire article when I have more time but I did scan through it and it looks like it'll be a great read.
Does anyone have any info on the '52-'54 proofs? I think I recall proofartworkoncircs mentioning something about these in another thread a while back.

Other than the fact that this discovery died on the vine?
I picked up a re-engraved version in NGC PR66 in 1/2009 and a straight version in PCGS PR65 in 2/2009.
Of course, I thought they were pretty cool then and still do today but the collectibility is really up in the air since most folks don't get beyond the "well that's pretty cool" phase. It's kinda one of those "What were they thinking?" scenarios at the US Mint.
Aside from the CONECA listings, I don't think this really went any further unless our buddy Roger W Burdette is working on some research in the background.
The name is LEE!

Cool stuff!
It's tough to say if these will take off, most likely not, but they are still very cool and interesting to look for and study.
1952 re engraved details I have come across lately.

A couple of the above posted 1952's look like just normal abraded die. There are some detailed pictures at varietyvista

The 1952 403
Only 2 graded by pcgs both pr67. Here is mine!!!!!! I have seen two more in existence sold on eBay. I lost the auctions like a fool. It's hard to photograph this variety faint details.

Great reference for quality photos Dave,
These posted are all definitely re engraved. The pics are taken through flips and with bad lighting. On my cell phone.
I am not good with photos and lighting yet.
In person the details are very visible and apparent even with a low power Loupe. I'll post pcgs true view images when I get some. I have a group of 4 in currently with pcgs.

keep in mind some cool re-engraved dies are not Cherrypickers varieties and will not be designated at PCGS - hope all goes well for you because of the submission costs involved.
New Unlisted

Here is a new one I just found. I have not seen or heard any describe a 1955 re engraved detail. Here below is a strongly enhanced hair line from the middle area of the ribbon down to almost the bottom of bust.

These Re-engraved Jeffs don't seem to bring much of a premium, unlike the Washingtons when they are low pop.
I agree with this. The exceptions are the 1938 pr67 re engraved, they have some value and more appeal so far than the 1952s
I have "made" or had attributed, close to a dozen of the various 1938 varieties from pr65-67 and raw. 2 sold below list, 5 have been traded for other nickels or varieties. I have seen auction prices range from 50-160 for the various 1950s era re engraved examples. I have sold one 52-404 and traded a 404,402,401.
The price guide prices for the 52s seem about fair, as yet no value has been assigned to my 52-403.
To date sales have been somewhat lackluster and attributed examples linger at 1/2 list price in lower grades. (Again the 38s are better. The 402 is the most rare in my experience, in regards to offerings on eBay for the last two years. Either attributed or not.
I feel the Jefferson series is still vastly under appreciated and undervalued (1938-2006)

Wooooo! After a year of searching I have just taken possession of my second 1952 fs403. A cherrypick sort of. Advert said cameo, it's not, and I paid a premium for it raw as a cameo. But i thought I saw the double bump on the hair. Vindicated

Here is some shots of the unlisted 1954 proof. It's wavy with two parallel re engraved marks along the lower ribbon horizontal area
