While working on my current Mantle run in PSA 8 or better I received some good advice to have multiple pursuits to keep things fresh as well as not reach for cards out of boredom and make collecting mistakes. Below are some photos of what I have been working on which is from sets and cards I collected as a kid. I started collecting in 1973 a little along with 1974, and 1975-76-77 through 1980 were my big years.

I was a big Reds fan as a kid, and it seemed that most Reds players those years were on the NL All Star team. I decided to collect all star players from these years as a side collection. It has been fun so far, brings back great memories, and is relatively inexpensive. Much cheaper than a PSA 8 Mantle card and some can be just as fun :D Hope you enjoy the photos.

    Love that idea. I've found finding new projects keeps the current project fresh. Especially when you're down to the final few cards and it's starts getting tougher to find.

    Like the AllStar idea. Have been picking those upnin the 50's and 60's. Never occurred to me to pick them up when part of the main set like in '76 and '77. Nice centered examples.

    Last project which I am "one" pack away from but a biggy is a run of PSA packs from the 70's. Just picked up a regular 1975 (to go with my mini pack) along with a regular 76 pack - previous one had a 1974 wrapper. Of course the only remaining one is 1971 which is the toughest and most expensive, and got smoked on my bids on the last eBay listings.

    Thank you for the nice note Don. As far as centering and eye appeal I have learned a lot the past couple of years from Matt (DM23) and Jeff (Card Country) which has hopefully helped me to find some better cards for the grade. The fun thing about this run is that it is when I collected as a kid so it has personal appeal, and the price difference between these cards and Mantle's is huge.

    Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

    I love the All Star cards and your wax run. Any guesses on what a 71 psa wax pack would go for??

    Last two 1971 PSA packs went for $2400 and $2100 last month. Bid over $2k and got smoked on both :D Hopefully everyone that needed one grabbed those two so I can grab one at some point.

    Thanks for that info. were those psa 8s? is there a huge price difference between 7 and 8s

    I think they were 7's - crazy stuff for a 1971 pack!
