A new 1924 buffalo nickel for my collection.

Just received it today after a very long wait. It was love at first sight. See if you can guess the grade of this one :)

    I'm not going to attempt to grade it, but holy cow, what's going on with it?? It has a ghost 5th leg!

    guess of 64 given scratch on forehead.

    it appears to have a scratch on the forehead and on the reverse there looks to be a die break that has filled behind the hind leg, the result of what can only be extreme fatigue, LDS. the stress makes it look like a Type One.

    My first though was die crack along the hairline vs. scratch. Was the camera out of focus to give the coin the "stretched look". Looks overall gemmy to me. 65.

    The 100% wire rim obverse is very cool looking. Not a bit of luster missing or any rub on that rim. Can't recall seeing a wide rim like that before....similar to proofs. All the "lettering" looks stretched and/or truncated. Reilly weird if that's what it looks like in hand.

    Looking at Liberty and America makes it look like a well greased set of dies. I also agree about being broadstruck. Alot of room between five cents and the rim. A very eye appealing coin though.

    I don't know toning of Buff's too well. If I saw that toning on a silver coin, I'd say it had a high probability of being in a Dansco. Do you think that is Dansco toning?

    In any case, it's a Pretty coin!

    Many times with buffalo nickels the alloy was mixed incorrectly thus you'll see this streaking. Normally I shy away but this Buff is a little different than all the other girls :)

    Well it certainly isn't a typical strike, that's for sure. The "stretching"/metal flow of the peripheral details, suggests that there wasn't enough metal to fill those details during strike. However, the obverse rims are present, so a collar must have been involved in the strike. This means that it might have been struck in a collar of abnormally large size, or struck with a partial collar, imo.

    Here is a similar 1924 buffalo nickel with a partial collar: https://sullivannumismatics.com/coin/pcgs-5c-1924-buffalo-nickel-partial-collar-strike-ms-64 It displays many similar effects. Buffalo nickels have also been known to have been struck with inverted die setup, so it is not strange to see the rim formed on the obverse, but missing on the reverse.

    Actually, looking at the coin in the link I provided, they have the same gunk in the rim near "LIBERTY". They were struck with the same die pair.

    I should be more clear. It didn't have enough metal to fill those details, being that it wasn't fully constrained by a collar.

    As an aside, broadstruck coins often have strong central details. Even broadstruck 1964 nickels can have near full steps

    The reason is this seller, bless his heart, uses a scan rather than an image from a camera. No apology needed. Good work. ;) Yes I fell for this coin at first sight. I had a feeling it had color but that's not why I pulled the trigger. It's interesting to say the least and pretty too :)

    That is a real beauty! The legends give me pause, but I don't see CHD buying a problematic coin. MS65.

    so it isn't fully Broadstruck, just partially Broadstruck. what about the reverse that looks like a die break??

    Not sure what your looking at.

    the area that extends from the Buffalo's tail along the rim to what should be the mound. it looks unusual. maybe it is just an artifact of the picture, but it makes it look like the tail isn't there and the leg is missing, at least partially.

    There's a lot going on with this piece and honestly that's the reason I bought it. Most everything on the edges are very much stretched out quite a bit as the central regions are really hammered. I thought it was cool enough to pull the trigger and I'm glad I did.
