Many of those above I would not call a Rainbow toned coin. A Rainbow is an arch, quarter, half, or full circle. The OP's is a rainbow. This one below is not a rainbow. It's target toned but there is no rainbow effect.
The one below that I'd say is a rainbow.

To be honest, I don't see multiple colors on some of the above posts. I think Bob's explanation is a good one. An actual rainbow in nature always presents multiple colors and the term as it applies to coins should do the same. While I like the toning on the Kansas Quarter below, I would not, at any time, call it a rainbow of colors. Yes, the colors accentuate the Buffalo and I like the coin.
This Olympic commemorative, on the other hand, would not cause me pause in calling it a rainbow toned coin in any situation where I was selling it.
I think a lot of people think "nicely toned" = "rainbow". There are many beautifully toned coins that aren't rainbows, (including several above) and it isn't downplaying the coin at all to categorize them differently.

I agree this is a rainbow. It has a number of colors in including ROYGBIV - red/magenta, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, etc. A bonus is that the color is a circular bow shape, like a rainbow.

I really like seeing the term RAINBOW used when it is just different shades of tan/brown. Ugh.

This coin, while nice is not even close to rainbow toned as are so many others in this post.
Rainbow Stars
Color on Top of Color on Top of Color equals Rainbow.
To me, when you invoke the 'R' word, it has to involve a good portion of the toning. Not orange or blue with a sliver of rainbow effect to it. JMHO.

Agree with you.

This ASE I actually named "Rainbow". Bought it in a PCI holder at a local show years ago.
