Cac stickers

So I have to ask...... I am a full time dealer. I do not deal much in slabbed coins. (Just my customer preference) normally I deal in low to mid grade coins.

Recently I was offered some "cc" Morgan's in pcgs plastic. They also all had green cac stickers. The show I was offered these I had no Internet to check the cert numbers or anything. I had another dealer that only deals in slabbed coins tell me he thought the slabs were real but the cac stickers didn't look right. He said they were smaller then normal. This threw up red flags to me and I declined the deal.

Later that day I talked to some other dealers who were also offered these coins and some said they thought the holder was fake and some said they thought the cac stickers were fake and some said everything was fake..

So my question is has anyone ever seen a confirmed fake cac sticker on a coin??? Or did this guy just try to print something out at home to just make a few extra bucks. He had other slabbed coins with no cac stickers on them. All the dealers that do alot with slabs said they didn't look like the right size and the green color didn't look right. These were 3 1883 cc Morgan's in 63 holders

Luckily you can do a cert verification on CAC's website. I've never heard of fake stickers, but it certainly doesn't surprise me.

It is certainly possible that they were fake stickers, but without cert numbers to check on the CAC site, we will never know.

I can't recall reading about fake CAC stickers, but if there is money to be made then I would imagine that at some point it will or has happened. It is true that CAC has a public database where you simply run the cert number for verification, but if someone has also counterfeited a holder and used a cert number that already had received a CAC sticker then it, too, would show up as verified.

I wouldn't think that a bogus sticker would be used on such a common coin. How much can it improve the value on what I would consider to be a 'widget' coin ?

That's what I thought. The price doesn't change that much between grades. I don't know. Like I said I don't do much with slabs and cac stickers this is just what other dealers said that it didn't look right

The approach that most counterfeiters take is not to produce something that is perfect, too much time, effort, and skill involved, but to make something that is close enough to pass casual and often a bit more than casual inspection. Adding a fake CAC sticker to a slab would for some folks increase their level of comfort with a counterfeited item, especially the less than fully educated consumer.

    Just a Thursday thought!

Since there seemed to be multiple opinions that the stickers were smaller than normal, I guess the question is:

Has CAC ever changed their hologram sticker in any way?

I'm not aware of any multiple "versions" of the sticker, and I'm guessing someone here would have heard about it if there were.....

I think they (CAC) have a database with all their stickered coins. They might be the ones to ask about sizes and placement of the stickers.

In the world of collectibles fakes are an ever-present problem. This isn't a new problem. If something doesn't look or feel right just pass ... as you did. Smart move.

    I agree with 2915th.
If it stinks, go to another vendor for your fish.
If one were to counterfeit slabs/CAC stickers it would make sense to do it on generic coins that wouldn't raise a lot of eyebrows.
In our area a pair of criminals just got busted passing fake $10 bills.
Who checks $10's? Same idea I guess.

The best way to figure out fake holders/stickers is to know what an MS-63 coin should look like. If they are fake holders. the coin inside is not going to be a good one. There is no reason to fake a CAC sticker on that coin either. Might be time to join the 2000's and get a phone with internet also! :)
